A catchy main theme recurs (slightly varied) between contrasting sections (one of which is fugal). This work can also be used as a virtuosic 'encore' piece. Due to the technical dexterity required, the piece is best suited to higher-grade students and more advanced players. However, its broadly tonal style makes it attractive for the listener.

This set of steel constructions is on permanent display in Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Musical material and structure have been derived from the contours and form of the sculptures. The original version of Promenade IV was flexibly scored for any instrumental combination, in four parts. However, this incarnation (Promenade IVa) is a transcription for any keyboard instrument (e.g. piano or organ, etc.). It is the fourth in a series of pieces based on Caro's work. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of keyboard player, including students and advanced players.

The piece is designed literally as a 'Prelude' to the first chapter of George Orwell's novel, from which it derives its programmatic detail. In a dictatorship that holds complete control over people, 'big brother' surveillance cameras watch over everyone. The main character, Winston Smith, is determined to escape this totalitarian society and find freedom. Stylistically, the piece uses a stark, angular, post-tonal idiom in order to reflect the aforementioned subject matter. However, the work remains accessible for the listener and is appropriate for higher-level pianists, including advanced students and professional players.

I have set the piece in A major and in 12/8 time in order to simplify the score. Likewise, whilst the melody and bass lines follow the original, the arpeggiated infill, whilst retaining the given harmonic structure, has been simplified to fit the instrument. It is beautiful, straightforward, and well within the capability of any player of UK Grade VI and above.
