The song was first released on the album ABBA Oro: Grandes Éxitos.Chiquitita was performed at UNICEF's 1979 charity event, Music for UNICEF Concert, broadcast worldwide by the United Nations General Assembly. As a result of the event, the group donated half of the song's royalties to UNICEF. To this day, 50% of the proceeds from the song go to UNICEF, in recognition of the International Year of the Child in 1979.
