The verses of this Anglican priest who was a contemporary of John Donne describe beautifully a dialog between 'Love’ (the Divine) and the human being.  The score attempts to illustrate the dramatic progression of this spiritual dialogue in which the eternal ´Love´ gives himself up to welcome the human being with merciful insistence as a privileged guest at a mystical meal. To make this dialogue clear while the choir takes the voice of the human nature -full of shame and guilt- while the Trebles assume the voice of the Divine Love -full of mercy and compassion-.  Neither the choosing of trebles nor the number 3 is casual: Childhood evokes naturally ideas of love and purity which are attributes of God himself, thus trebles seemed to me an appropriate choice to represent the voice of “Love� and the fact that there are three, is an intended reference to the Christian doctrine of the Trinity.

Nocturnes have a long tradition – from the notturni by Mozart and Haydn via the nocturnes of the Romantic era to Chopin who elevated the genre to fascinating character piece: He created ambivalently shining gems in an unreal world of human nature which were as close to the extremely sublime as to a demonic abyss. Enjott Schneider's '3 Nocturnes', the core of each of which is characterized by a Latin motto, stand in this tradition. Cicero's 'Somnus est imago mortus' sees sleep as a resemblance of death. 'Die Zeit eilt weg, die Liebe aber bleibt' [Time passes but love remains] explores the ambivalence between that what is hurrying and that what stays eternally. Ovid's 'Der Tropfen höhlt den Stein nicht durch Kraft, sondern durch stetes Fallen' [The drop hollows the stone, not by force but by constant dripping] has its counterpart in a minimalist motif which has a lasting influence on the listener through its constant sounding.

Written in E, the work consist of two themes that have hymn-like and chorale qualities interspersed with lighthearted passages that depict the strength and weakness of human nature. The first theme resembles a melody of the ancient church; the melody has a mystical quality depicting God's majesty. The transition is light in content as it gives a listener a break from the serious mood of the first theme. The second theme is a chorale and is chordal in texture; it resembles a church hymn sung in many churches. Moreover, the second theme is written in B Flat Major, depicting one's praising God in spirit; the general mood is quiet. Following that section is the transition that gradually builds up excitement before the restatement of the first theme. The second theme is restated in E Major, but its longer note values are placed over the repeated bass and chordal patterns, a style that many composers use in their works, including Igor Stravinsky's L'Histoire Du Soldat. Once again, the lighthearted transitional passage recurs before the chimes start to strike four times. Following the chimes, the chorale is stated in E Major and begins quietly and builds up power as the work nears its ending; the chorale, unlike its first statement depicts the singing of praise with joy. This piece may be performed in concert halls and churches; it could give people fond memories of recitalists who enjoy bringing excitement to the public.
