Choral Choir (TTBB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.943040 By Toto. By David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, Prince Lamont Board Priese, and Robin Dimaggio. Arranged by Jonathan Kilhams. Pop,Rock. Octavo. 18 pages. Jonathan Kilhams #4797945. Published by Jonathan Kilhams (A0.943040). About the pieceAfrica is a song by the American rock band Toto. It was included on their 1982 album Toto IV, and released as a single on September 30, 1982. It reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart on February 5, 1983 (the band's only number one there), and number three on the UK Singles Chart the same month. The initial idea and words for the song came from David Paich. Jeff Porcaro explains the idea behind the song: a white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past.Paich said: At the beginning of the '80s I watched a late night documentary on TV about all the terrible death and suffering of the people in Africa. It both moved and appalled me, and the pictures just wouldn't leave my head. I tried to imagine how I'd feel about if I was there and what I'd do.In 2015, Paich explained the song is about a man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance. In 2018, Paich explained the song is about a person flying in to meet a lonely missionary. As a child, Paich attended a Catholic school. Several of the teachers had done missionary work in Africa, and this became the inspiration behind the line I bless the rains down in Africa.About the arrangementI have tried to keep as much of the original material used by Toto as possible, within the confines of a male voice choir arrangement. The arrangement is for TTBB and piano and can include sound effects made by the choir at the beginning to imitate rain and a thunderstorm. A bongo/djembe drum can be played through the choruses to add more of an African percussive feel. My thanks must go to Gareth Giles who helped create the piano part for this arrangement.Duration: 4 minsAdditional Parts & Social MediaIf you require any additional learning parts or rehearsal tracks then please contact me directly through www.jonathankilhams.com. I am also on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so please let me know if your choir are planning to sing my arrangement - it is always nice to know where in the world it is being performed. String Quartet String Quartet - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1334145 Composed by Trad & Alan Edgar. Folk,Traditional. 36 pages. Alan Edgar Ted Moon #920362. Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.1334145). Here'a suite about life in the Isle of Man based on Manx folk tunes and religious music.  All the harmonies and some decorations are mine. There are 5 movements. I MAINLY CELEBRATIONS:  I found all the melodies in The Mona Melodies, a group of traditional tunes (probably heard in Douglas) collected in 1820.  Hunt the Wren is a surprising, lively, traditional event on St Stephen's Day when villagers dance and sing round the town hoping for gifts. This tune is dorian.  A Lullaby in aeolian follows, then In Praise of Wine, in ionian, while at the same time fragments of the Lullaby are heard from inside a home.  The Wren group return.II FAITH Religious music  I assume could have been heard in Manx churches.  Two supposedly Celtic-style antiphon melodies from a 13th-century breviary from Caen  (a) The Holy Cross (b)  The Saints.  I made them into parallel organum with a drone.  Between them is an elaborate ancient melody (labelled Martyrs) for Psalm 80 (Lord, come and save us), which I found with Gaelic words.  I accompany with 3 more parts.  The whole movement is in dorian mode.III EMOTIONS:  Mourning for a Prince is a mixolydian tune also found in The Mona Melodies.  I give the tune to the viola.  In Praise of Beauty is sung by the cello in C major.  This tune is also found in The Mona Melodies, as Brown Oxen (Berry Dowin).  William Brown (Illiam Dhoan) (should be Dhone, I believe) is the air used for Love Lost and Found: again from The Mona Melodies.  I made it C minor at first (love lost) , then  the original version in F major (love found).IV CAR JUAN NAN (Let's All Dance) is a reel, from which I took a few bars and made it into a round.  My source was the book Ed. Colin Jerry Kiaull yn Theay 1:  Manx music and songs for folk instrumentsV WORK, REST and PLAY.  The Spinning Song is major/ionian, the Milking Song is major pentatonic, but my mooing bass part does not respect that: I found those tunes in  Kiaull yn Theay.   The Harvest Celebration Dance (Yn Mheillea) is from manxmusic.com.  The Goodnight Song (Arrane Oie Vie) was traditionally sung after a Christmas Eve event in the church, after more formal proceedings and after the singing of many gloomy vaguely religious songs there and a visit to the pub.  Collected from Mr E, Corteen and Mr T.  Taggart of Malew:  my source:  manxmusic.com.DURATION: 15 minutes.

It is all about understanding ornamentation.Welcome to the PCU Series for classroom-based groups. This series focuses on learning by doing; there are many accomplished performers within our school classrooms throughout the world, but my years of experience has taught me that many of these students learn to play by rote – literally be learning one note followed by another – without gaining full understanding of how the pieces work musically and theoretically. Indeed, some of them can perform to a high standard using this method, but then really struggle with composition and general musical understanding later in their educational careers.I equate this to learning to speak sentences in a foreign language without fully understanding what those sentences actually mean.So who is this book for?It is for music teachers to use with their students who are learning to create exam-level compositions within a school environment. It is ideal for courses such as the American High School Diploma, GCSE, IGCSE, SCS, HKCEE, IB(MYP), SPM, GCEO, CCEF, HKCEE, VSSD, GES or ICSE.It is designed to cater for almost any instrument due to the parts being provided in many different keys and clefs (including tab and bass tab). Drum parts are intentionally not provided as drummers still need to have a good understanding of non-percussive elements such as melody and harmony; I would suggest that they play a keyboard part for the purposes of learning about composition. You can also download backing tracks of all pieces in this series by searching:Classroom Performance educational pack: MELODY backing tracksThese contain parts 2-5, allowing part 1 to be played live over the top.How to use this resourceThis pack comprises three stages, the third of which should be gained from success with the first two:1. Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1477723 Composed by Aaron Robinson. 20th Century,Classical. Score. 55 pages. Music at Immanuel #1055103. Published by Music at Immanuel (A0.1477723). Dedicated to pianist Eric Xi Xin Liang, PIANO SONATA by American composer Aaron Robinson is a programmatic work on a monumental scale. Composed in four movements representing four areas of Maine: Machigonne (Portland), Down East, Malaga Island and Katahdin, each paints a detailed portrait of a specific time and place in the State’s history. Its compositional structure draws heavily on the sights and sounds associated with each region while weaving original themes throughout. Mimesis is used to represent the native calls of the indigenous birds found within the state, such as the phoebe, bobolink and the pileated woodpecker; while hymns, songs and sea shanties are incorporated to represent various time periods. Movement I - MACHIGONNE - Native Americans originally named what is today the Portland peninsula of Maine “Machigonne”, which translates “Great Neck”. The movement quotes several sacred and ritual songs of the Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine. The struggle between centuries of habitation by the native peoples of the area is represented by the arrival of early settlers and illustrated by juxtaposing hymn tunes and dance music of the past eras.Movement II - DOWN EAST - is the eastern coastal area of the state closely associated with the French territory of Acadia. Replete with historic sea shanties and tunes, the sound of tolling ship and buoy bells, lighthouse fog horns, and ocean winds are intertwined to create a high-spirited journey which culminates in the familiar Shaker tune from Alfred, Maine.Movement III - MALAGA ISLAND - Today an uninhabited reserve, Malaga Island was once the home to an interracial community dating from the 1860s to 1911, when its residents were forcibly evicted by the State. The opening theme represents the remnants of the island in its present state; haunted by the memories and unsettling muted solitude of the past and its historical injustice. A peaceful hymn depicting simpler times becomes slowly unraveled, erupting in a traumatic chaos that is never resolved. A ghostly refrain can be heard in the distance as the movement concludes.Movement IV - KATAHDIN - Mount Katahdin (“Catahdrin”), called “Great Mountain” by the Penobscot Native Americans, is located within the Northeast Piscataquis County, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The grandeur of its majesty is portrayed by the original themes depicting epic rising and falling passages traversing over centuries. Native Americans believed the mountain to be the home of the storm god Pamola (a place to be avoided), which is characterized by ever-changing major and minor keys within the often times turbulent motifs. The sonata ends in a tonal key: bringing the atonality and discordant change of the work and its representation as a whole to a final resolve.PIANO SONATA lasts approximately 25 minutes.

Violin and piano - Advanced - Digital Download SKU: ZY.DO-1525 Composed by David Braid. Score and part. 32 pages. Les Editions Doberman-Yppan (digital) #DO 1525. Published by Les Editions Doberman-Yppan (digital) (ZY.DO-1525). Life - Still Life, Op. 165 (violin & piano) - David BraidI am keen on concise musical forms such as Prelude and Fugue, where there is one clear straightforward idea, followed by another that is more involved & developed. In keeping with that idea, this work consists of two distinct pieces, the first - Transfigured Life - aims to draw in the listener with its quick, dancing rhythm and simple, melodic violin part. It 'transfigures' via a few short solo piano interludes into just two alternating notes to end - which are the core of the original idea, now made clear by clearing everything else out of the way.The second piece - Still Life - retains its sense of stillness through an uncomplicated piano line that gives lots of space for the violin's contrasting (but again simple) part. As an absolute, not programmatic, piece the title refers to the atmospheric colour and pacing only; it's up to the listener to see 'Still life' of their choosing in their own mind.A note on performance: Despite my reference to 'simple' lines, and the work's determined avoidance of mainstream modernist squeak - the work has certain performance challenges of phrasing and ensemble that requires considerable skill and musicianship. The work has had the privilege of being recently recorded by violinist Ezgi Sarıkcıoğlu and pianist Rossitza Stoycheva, and is available on all major platforms:https://open.spotify.com/album/6p5YIe17ci0UMuo2RqZgjRhttps://music.apple.com/gb/album/transfigured-life-still-life-world-premiere-recording/1738035953.

Dedicated to pioneers, the early Utah Mormon pioneers in particular.YouTube video: https://youtu.be/9JVJAuc7P_ABless this arm, keep it sound, as I turn this desert ground. Water flows from mountain stream. By Thy Hand, this land redeem. Sanctify all who toil, blessing all that grows. Let the desert now rejoice, blossom as the rose.   Bless all seeds, as I sow. Let them here take root and grow. Send Thy rains from up above, warming sunshine filled with love. May the toil of these hands, bring Thy blessings close. Let the desert now rejoice, blossom as the rose.   Fire or frost, wind or rain; may my work not be in vain. Help me prosper ev'ry day. Keep the locust still at bay. Through each trial, help me stand, in Thy strength repose. Let the desert now rejoice, blossom as the rose.   In my soul, deserts be, waiting to be turned by Thee. Let Thy blessing as the rain, open up my heart again. May the Lord, bless my toil, ev'ry weed dispose. Let the desert now rejoice, blossom as the rose.

Full of vitality, endlessly melodic, brilliantly orchestrated, it begins and ends in the romantic tradition, but for the most part expresses something more modern and individualistic, not without controversy in its time. Variation of style and structure is drawn from the descriptive (literary) nature of compositions, and an extraordinary inventiveness enlivens the scenes, moods and situations. Strauss said once that he produced music the way cows give milk, and indeed his music rarely seems contrived. The opera Strauss wrote 15 operas on a variety of subjects and across the whole spectrum of drama. He acknowledged being enchanted by the soprano voice, and his writing for it highlights many of the works, including Adriane auf Naxos (composed in 1912). The opera has been described as 'sparkling', which sums it up well, and passages influenced by Bach, Mozart, Puccini, and Wagner add to the interest. The storyline is a play within a play, the second part being the mythological 'Opera' staged in the story. The three pieces transcribed* are from this Opera. The guitar arrangements All classical guitar pieces are compromises. The instrument has only six strings, the left hand four fingers able to be used, and with the right hand its rare to use more than three fingers and the thumb. So, despite the amount of noise possible, it's inevitable that passages occur where either harmony, bass or fragments of counterpoint that would be beneficial are left out. In particular, the higher up the neck music is played the simpler it tends to be, if harder to play, and unless the low bass is an open string there wont be any. So I think the main part of attaining a fair transcription (better to be called an arrangement if the original musical structure is not strictly followed, as in this case) is determining how a good compromise can be reached. Melody, counterpoint, bass and main harmonies demand inclusion, and register is important. One may generally assume the original score can't be improved on. However, if the music may sound well on guitar, and the above elements can be incorporated without the playing becoming very difficult, something enjoyable to play and worthwhile listening to should be able to be achieved. Overture; 'A golden time …' Here the Mozart influence, better, inspiration, is wonderfully evident. A gentle waltz time (only the first section of the overture is transcribed) carries the colourful harmonies, strong melodic threads and connecting flourishes that stamp both pieces. The aria is alluded to in the Overture several times, which as you would expect, is intricately woven with the hints themes later to be established in the Opera. It has a kind of 'jazzy' freedom, and it's always miraculous to me that composition so involved can retain its musical line, here done in Strauss's inimitable way. The aria, sung not far into the Opera, has the perfect inevitability of Mozart, but again it is Strauss. As explained, keys have been changed to suit the guitar. Chorus and Aria This selection from the finale has features well worth trying to translate. The device of having a strong chorus, in the style of a Bach chorale, stated and then counterpointed by a solo voice in a restatement, is potent, and that in the opera the chorus (of the three nymphs) isn't immediately followed by the accompanying aria (of Ariadne) means the latter comes as a moment of surprising beauty. Neither parts are complicated, and lovely arpeggios, a feature Strauss's music, often impart the assured progressions. A problem was to capture the distinct register of the so.
