Nu Tal (Mi Tierra) or My Land, is one of my first orchestral works, commissioned by Dr. Irving Ramirez, associate conductor of the El Salvador’s Symphony Orchestra.At the beginning, the idea was to set four small sketches of different images from my country. The 3rd movement was composed first, at that point I didn’t have a name for the work but after a talk with my mother in law, Aracely Sánchez; who is an expert in Salvadoran folklore, I decided to change the work’s name to Nu Tal (My Land in Nahuatl) and use some elements from our folklore. Then, I combined the idea I had from the images and the folk rhythms and tunes to create the whole work.The first movement of the work contains actually two movements. The first part is an image of a plane going to El Salvador. While the plane comes out of the clouds a beautiful land is seen through the window until the plane lands safely at its destination. Immediately, the folk part of the movement (movement II) begins with the invocation performed by the shell to the four cardinal points and then an autochthonous sound is presented welcoming our guests to this magical land, and the theme develops until the end of the movement.The third part was the first composed and it is an image including various ideas that represents a vision of El Salvador from different perspectives and the complexity of the different generations that are currently creating El Salvador’s demographic landscape.The fourth movement is an amalgamate of folkloric ideas and images. The beginning is the call from a church by the bells, then the brass presents the main theme of the movement, which is based on the Gregorian chant Salve Regina that I deconstructed using different rhythmic meters. This 12 bar melody was once the most famous tune in the world.  I have kept that tune intact but set it to a flowing accompaniment that is part Classical and part New Age.  Because the melody was so short I created an extended bridge between the verses.  I didn't want anything to compete with that beautiful first section, so I created a solo Left Hand countermelody for the bridge.  An expressive piece of sheer beauty from beginning to end.  2 page score; 2:40 minutesThis piece is also found in my book, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Popular Songs 1900-1925, a collection of 51 of her songs I have arranged for piano solo, which is also available on this site.

The only thing I was sure about was, I wanted it to be minimalist in style with ideas morphing into each other and letting that process shape the music.   “The Menagerie� is written for String Orchestra and is around 8’ 25� in duration. From the initial one note pedal tone, the piece evolves providing melodic and rhythmic nuances which create the music and direction.

Written by Sting, the single was the biggest US and Canadian hit of 1983, topping the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for eight weeks (the band's only No. 1 hit on that chart), and the Canadian RPM Chart for four weeks. Their fifth UK No. 1, it topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks. The song also reached the Top 10 in numerous other countries.Sting wrote the song in 1982 in the aftermath of his separation from Frances Tomelty and the beginning of his relationship with Trudie Styler. Their split was controversial. As The Independent reported in 2006, The problem was, he was already married – to actress Frances Tomelty, who just happened to be Trudie's best friend. This sweet little march – more of a cakewalk really – was originally written for piano by the famously eccentric French composer Erik Satie but it suits the brass quintet very well. I made this arrangement as long ago as 1987 when I didn’t know much about the composer. Many years later I visited his former home, now a museum, in the Normandy port of Honfleur. It’s well worth a visit and gives a valuable insight into this fascinating composer.The piece makes a delightful short interlude or encore and I’ve tried to share the interest around the players, although the tuba is not exactly pushed to its limits!

I think it’s a very effective work, but sadly the Musical Director of the choir for whom it was written thought ‘the parts were too high’ and it was never performed. She may have been right about the alto part, but it was the way she said it after I presented her with 40 copies for her choir. Guess what? I didn’t write another thing for them, and no, I’m not telling you which choir it was, but they are from Exmouth in Devon and they were formed in 1997.

I'm very pleased with - it's a major piece of work, and think it will make a great concert piece for brass bands of intermediate standard.

I didn’t set out to make hard to play, and it certainly doesn’t sound hard. If you’re struggling, just roll the chords and use lots of pedal. Good luck!

Published by Erik Cole (A0.996127). This is a transcription of the complete Pictures at an Exhibition for double reed choir. It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. This is easily the most technically challenging of the movements, though I didn’t wind up having to add much more in difficulty over what Ravel already wrote in his orchestration.

If you’ve ever seen a funny video on YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, etc., chances are that you’ve heard this tune before…many many times.  It makes cute and funny videos, well, cuter and funnier.Kevin Macleod wrote this cute and funny tune, and it’s written to loop until the video ends.  The longer the video, the higher it goes (I think, although having a cute video last more than 5 minutes may wear you out.)  While I could have modulated it 5 times, I didn’t.  There is one key change, and after that key change, this cute and funny tune goes Radio City Rockette-ish before definitely coming to an end at around the 2 minute mark.Scored for saxophone quartet - soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone.This would be a great recital opener, closer, or filler.  Or, you could have a few members of your group act out a cute and funny scene to it.  The possibilities are endless!Duration: 2 minutes.
