Matt Arnett Music #684341. Published by Matt Arnett Music (A0.1080129). This song works shockingly well for orchestra - and everyone gets something fun to play. I did this arrangement with 2nd year students in mind. The piece is really good for focusing on low 2's in the violin and viola, dotted quarter AND triplet rhythms for everyone, and rests on beat 1. The rhythms are almost always true to the original - listen to it with your students to help them feel the tricky spots. You need a strong bass laying down the harmonic foundation throughout for this to work, cello is not doubling. There are usually three independent rhythmic parts going on, which presents a fun challenge and makes the layers of the piece fun and interesting. The piece also utilizes some fun techniques including stomping on the floor (sounds awesome on stage!) and knocking on the back of the instrument. There is an optional cut to remove the bridge if the piece is too much/too long for your group. This piece is a blast to play and I hope your students enjoy it!

This song has a simple format, but was a challenge to arrange for a duo because it often requires more than two lines to be played at once. There are multiple verses and choruses that champion bass, vocal, and guitar lines which are all essential and must to be played simultaneously to maintain the integrity of the music. I had to be creative and infuse the viola part with elements of the bass line along with the guitar while the violin carries the vocal line. I still found ways to trade the melody between violin and viola, and added double stops where they add to the harmonies and overall affect without being terribly difficult. Measures are numbered, parts and score are bowed, and rehearsal letters included.

My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music and, most importantly, that it also makes pianistic sense. Each of my arrangements is made for a specific student, so the results will vary in terms of playing level. Most decisions are based on their current skills and abilities, or where I would like for them to be when they complete the piece. This arrangement was made for an early intermediate student working in Level 2 of the Keith Snell Books. She is in the NFMC Class of Elementary III. This was strangely not very tough for her at all. The tied notes can be tricky, but they are worth the effort. Have fun with this piece, especially with dynamics and pedal. It's a great opportunity to explore different pedaling rhythms. The jumping 3rds in measures 35 and 39 may be omitted if troublesome. Pedal and fingering suggestions are included.

The arrangement follows the original very closely in its form and harmonic choices, but builds it into the more intense emotional arc expected by barbershop contest audiences. In this version for mixed voices, the lie of the lines suggests a male lead and female baritone would work best - i.e. STAB rather than SATB (though that is an unfortunate acronym!). This version is notated using bass alta for the lower stave (i.e. sounding an octave higher than written, as traditionally used for female barbershop) as this gives fewer leger lines to read.
