The title is a popular expression, which is used as the date of a future occurrence that will never come to pass. In the case of the song, the 12th of Never is given as the date on which the singer will stop loving his beloved, thus indicating that he will always love her. Mathis initially disliked the song, which was released as the flip side to his number 1 hit single Chances Are. It was written by Jerry Livingston and Paul Francis Webster, the tune (except for the bridge) being adapted from The Riddle Song (also known as I Gave My Love a Cherry), an old English folk song. Mathis's original version reached number 9 on what is now called the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA in 1957. A version by Cliff Richard was released in 1964 and reached number 8 in the UK. Donny Osmond's version, produced by Mike Curb and Don Costa, was his second number 1 single in the UK, spending a single week at the top of the UK Singles Chart in March 1973. In the U.S. it peaked at number 8.

These traditional Xmas pieces (taken from the public domain) are especially arranged for the very beginner piano student or or the amateur pianist who wants to learn fast and don’t want to bother with too complicated arrangements . These arrangements are the most basic you can have and there are two versions of them for each piece: the first has only one note for the accompaniment and the second version has whether two or three notes chords or an octave. The melody is untouched in most of the tunes except for a few in which the rhythm needed to be simplified. All the pieces have been transposed in the key of C and the alterations have been kept to the minimum. So the goal for these players whether they are children of adults, is to have fun during the Xmas Holiday Season with the people they are with and love…I hope you enjoy and I wish you a Merry Merry Xmas! The mother was unmarried and ashamed and tried to ignore the child as if it were a reproach to her, the child became autistic and unable to react to others.  This setting for alto voice, cello and guitar reflect the mood of the poem in all its sadness.  The sound sample is a performance by the composer, with Chris Benson on cello.  (The guitar's 6th string is tuned to D - much use is made of 12th and 19th (or 7th if preferred) fret harmonics)  The pdf file contains score and parts.  An instrumental version of the the music, entitled Promenade d'hiver (viola, cello and guitar), is also available on this site.
