Piano,Tenor Saxophone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1201702 Composed by Brandon Nelson. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Multicultural,World. Score and part. 24 pages. Brandon Nelson #800317. Published by Brandon Nelson (A0.1201702). Jogo de Cartas is Portuguese for “card game.†I opted for the Portuguese to honor my patron for this piece, tenor saxophonist Philippe Trovão of Lisbon. In this work, I celebrate four favorite card games.War is a relatively simple game in which each player is dealt half of the deck. The players play one card and the player with the larger card value wins the “battle.†If both players play an identical value, a “war†is started. There are variations on the game at this point, but in one popular version, each player places three cards face down then play another card face up—whichever player has the highest card takes all the cards. The object is to win all of the cards in the deck. In this musical setting, the sax and piano are each a “player,†and each plays cards (translated into rhythmic values) with the conflict and victory painted in dynamic, sometimes dissonant vitality. In Solitaire, the sax plays alone as one plays this game alone. And, just as in the game, each phrase (or suit-based pile) becomes longer, more complex, and ends in an excited flurry of activity as “victory “ is achieved! The third movement, Blackjack, illustrates the deceptively-simple game of chance, with gradually ebbing and flowing tension until, in this case, the (sax) player takes the hand. The number 21 features prominently in the construction principles of the movement as a hand totaling 21 is considered the best in the game. The finale is a wild ride portraying a newer card game called Egyptian Rat Screw. In this colorful and fast-paced game, players flip one card up in turn, continuing to do so until one player puts down a face card. The next player then has several chances (based on the specific face card played) to match or beat that card. In a interesting quirk, if two players play cards of equal rank, the player who “slaps†the card pile first wins all of the cards in the pile. This unique game was fertile ground for musical interplay, illustrating both the back-and-forth and the more aggressive aspects of play!

Euphonium,Flute,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1141957 Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Chamber,Children,Classical. 65 pages. Sy Brandon #742334. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.1141957). “Allegories†is a five-movement composition based upon Aesop’s Fables. It was commissioned by and dedicated to Frank Meredith. The first movement “The Trumpeter Taken Captive†is a fable about how one’s actions affect the outcome. The trumpeter, who incites others to do battle, is as guilty as those who slay the enemy. The euphonium represents the trumpeter by playing battle tunes. Then the ensemble plays capture music, begging music, fatal music representing the slaying of the trumpeter (euphonium), and finally music representing the moral of the story. “The Boy Who Cried Wolf†is the basis for the second movement. The allegory is that nobody believes a liar. The flute plays a shepherd’s tune to represent the bored shepherd boy. The ensemble plays excited music three times as the boy cries wolf, the first two times just to amuse himself. After the third time when nobody responds to his cries, the flute plays a lament to end the movement. The third movement reflects the story of “The Goose That Laid The Golden Egg.†A golden euphonium melody accompanied by rich harmony represents the golden eggs laid by the goose. The ensemble then plays greedy music that is followed by a minor key lament as the farmer has killed his rich source of income because of his greed. A sweet dancing flute solo begins movement four appropriately named “The Fisherman and His Flute.†This short fable has the allegory of “timing is everything.†The poor fisherman expected the fish to jump out of the sea in response to his flute playing to no avail. When the ensemble plays a similar tune, it represents his success when he uses his net. The fisherman says “you bloody fish, when I played the flute you wouldn’t dance, but as soon I stopped, you started up.†The race between the “Tortoise and the Hare†is the subject of the last movement. The plodding euphonium represents the tortoise and the fast and agile flute represents the hare. The flute takes a nap in the middle of the movement and by the time the flute wakes up, it is too late to catch up with the slow and steady tortoise. The race is not always to the swift.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.905717 By Casting Crowns. By Mark Hall. Arranged by Brandon Haynes. Christian,Gospel. Octavo. 11 pages. Brandon Haynes #4609419. Published by Brandon Haynes (A0.905717).  If We are the Body was a praise song written over a decade ago in the early 2000’s by Mark Hall and performed by renowned praise-band Casting Crowns. The song still holds great significance nearly 16 years later as it poses important questions of discipleship to those who associate themselves as Christians. The song asks; if we are the body of Christ, what are we doing to further his kingdom? It also candidly points out many faults in Christian behavior, which is an honest quality I love about this song. Youth groups and praise-bands often perform this song; however, I have arranged the accompaniment more solemnly to highlight the text in a more meditative manner so that it is also accessible for adult church choirs.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1295718 Composed by Donald Ashwander. Ragtime. Score. 6 pages. The Donald Ashwander Estate #886015. Published by The Donald Ashwander Estate (A0.1295718). Waterloo Rag is a delightful solo piano composition that embodies the creative process of its composer, Donald Ashwander. This lively and spirited ragtime piece was born during a weekend getaway to the English countryside, as Donald embarked on a journey from Waterloo Station. The composition encapsulates the unique fusion of inspiration and happenstance that often characterizes the creative process.Donald Ashwander's adventure began when friends in England invited him for a weekend retreat in the picturesque countryside. Little did he know that this trip would provide the perfect backdrop for the birth of Waterloo Rag. As he made his way to Waterloo Station on that fateful morning, a catchy ragtime tune played in his mind. The journey itself proved to be a source of inspiration. As the train pulled out of Waterloo Station and began to gain speed, the rhythmic click-i-ty-clack of the wheels on the tracks seemed to harmonize with the tune that had been humming in Donald's head. In that serendipitous moment, he quickly jotted down the musical idea in his manuscript book, and the foundation of Waterloo Rag was laid. The composition captures the essence of the train journey itself, with its lively and rhythmic melodies mimicking the motion and energy of the locomotive. The piece seamlessly weaves together the clickety-clack rhythm of the train wheels with the vibrant ragtime style, resulting in a joyful and exhilarating musical experience. The final page of the sheet music contains special program notes by Donald Ashwander.
