Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755023). Legacy is a three movement composition that makes social commentary on the issue of global warming. It was commission and premiered by the Washington Sinfonietta, Rufus Jones, conductor, and later transcribed by the composer for quartet for the chamber music group, enhaké. I. Conflicts - This movement begins with a cry from native cultures admonishing our neglect of the environment. The cry is interspersed with debate regarding the seriousness of global warming. The debate grows stronger as the cries grow weaker. The debate is quieted by a measure of repeated chords that could be the words, stop it! stop it now!. A weak cry in the clarinet brings the introduction to a close. An Allegro section follows with a rhythmic and primitive sounding section representing the underdeveloped nations that are destroying the rain forests for economic gain. This material evolves into a more harmonic and contrapuntal section representing industrialized nations reluctant to change, also for economic reasons. Things quiet down as the music takes the listener to another part of the globe, East Asia. Conflict is again present in this section. The music returns to a varied restatement of the industrialized nations music before traveling to India for a section influenced by Raga. This section builds in dissonance until we hear the repeated stop it now chords from the introduction. A brief reprise of the cries bring the movement to a close. II. Consequences - This movement evokes a somber mood that is reflective of living in a climate of extremes. The movement is in arch form as it begins and ends with open harmony reflective of barren lands that once were fertile. The middle section serves as a climax expressive the harshness of the climate. Colleen McCollough’s book, A Creed for the Third Millennium was a source of inspiration for this movement. III. Sacrifice and Compromise - The movement begins with a strong section that suggests progress. It is followed by a quieter and intense section that alternates lyrical lines over a staccato ostinato that creates a sense of urgency. The opening section returns and is followed by a development of the ostinato section. This section is symbolic of how ideas need to be adapted in order for progress to be made. The opening section returns once more before leading into the concluding section where there is coming together of the instruments on a long lyrical line representing more and more people working together for change. The movement ends with a sense of triumph over adversity. Legacy has been recorded by enhaké on the Emeritus Recordings CD Legacy.

The composition is in three movements with each titled after a different period in Thailand history. The piece is loosely programmatic as it tries to capture the general mood of each era, rather than specific events. I. Sukhothai (The Dawn of Happiness) This movement reflects the ideal state, a land of plenty, and is peaceful. II. Ayutthaya This movement reflects a period of wealth that is characterized by wars with Burma. III. The Chakri Dynasty This movement reflects the more hectic pace of modern society where Thailand moves from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. Folk music of Thailand is built on a seven-note scale of equal intervals. The fourth and seventh notes of this scale are often used only for ornamental purposes. In order to approximate this scale, a pentatonic scale is used as it is like a major scale with the fourth and seventh tones removed. The pre-recorded sounds approximate some of the instruments traditionally used in Thai folk music.

This composition has eight short movements and is scored for wind quintet. I. Nebulous – The wandering tonality, slow tempo, frequent shifts of color, and lack of cadences gives this movement a feeling of vagueness. II. Puckish – This Allegretto movement has a playful quality that is created by staccato articulations, melodic leaps, unexpected use of rests and sudden tonality shifts to express an impish quality. III. Excited – A fast tempo and technical passages along with driving rhythms help this movement express excitement. IV. Horrified – Angular melodic lines, trills, dissonant chords, extreme ranges, and accents are all used to create this emotional representation. V. Jocular – This playful movement in an Allegretto tempo uses staccato, syncopation, meter change, dotted rhythms, and angular melodies for its laughing sounds. VI. Scattered – A Presto tempo with hemiola, staccato notes, and light scoring are used throughout this short movement that feels like it is constantly changing direction. VII. Regretful – This Lento movement has sad legato lines with unresolved dissonances at the beginning and end. The middle section creates a sense of hope but quickly returns to the sorrowful sound. VIII. Confident – This movement is in a march style with strong accents. Its clear lines and rhythms help portray strength in one’s beliefs.

The interpretation of this adage is that one always wants what someone else has instead of accepting one’s own uniqueness. During the movement, counterpoint is used to depict one instrument copying another. Towards the middle of the movement, tuba 2 eventually realizes its independence and states a bold melody of its own. The movement ends with the euphonium 1 playing its melody alone with pauses between the phrases as if looking over its shoulder wondering where the other musicians are. II. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. This setting represents a growing love despite the emptiness of being apart. Hollow intervals of fourths and fifths representing longing, occur at the beginning and end. A short love duet between two instruments occurs in the middle. III. Time flies when you are having fun. A rollicking six-eight meter is used to represent a children’s game of tag. There is a lot of alternation of short phrases as if one instrument is trying to tag the other and the other is trying to avoid being tagged. The dissonance and short accented notes represent taunting. IV. Every cloud has a silver lining. This movement is a prayer-like setting with alternation of minor and major harmonies representing the cloud and the silver lining respectively. V. He who hesitates is lost. This movement is very rhythmic and syncopated with the instruments alternating phrases in the manner of a call and response. It calls for split-second precision between the performers, therefore representing the adage. VI. A rolling stone gathers no moss. The last movement is a perpetual motion in a rolling six-eight meter. The musical ideas are very chromatic with the exception of main theme that appears first as a solo melody, then as several instruments together, and later as instruments in imitation. Towards the end, there are a few brief pauses and low accented notes as a life of activity has a few bumps along the way.

A great piece to show off the talents of mature flute and lever harp performers, this colorful character piece is appropriate for any recital or concert setting. Mannanàn mac Lir occupied several roles in the mythological universe of the Celtic peoples. Most notably, he was considered to be the god of the seas. He was also regarded as a psychopomp-that is, a figure associated with the realm of the dead, acting as a sort of veil between the worlds. In this work, I play on his connection to the sea by quoting the traditional Manx folk tune The Storm Is Up (Callin Veg Dhoan). The tune is developed through several permutations, each portraying a role Mannanàn played. Each movement is ushered to us by a psychopomp veil. With the Churl in the Drab Coat refers to Mannanàn’s association with the trickster figure Bodach an Chota Lachtna. The movement is erratic yet impishly playful. Mannanàn was also regarded as a sort of magician king. In that respect, he was given the role of Guardian of Mag Mell, a place that is comparable to the Nordic conception of Valhalla. Mag Mell was a plain of joy, a kingdom under the sea for a select few. Mannanàn protected this realm with the help of Fragarach, a sword which could slice through any armor and could compel anyone to tell the truth. This movement is bold and heavy in spirit, gradually becoming more dissonant as if portraying an ugly battle to defend this beautiful place. The final veil transports us to the end of times, a fading away of the once-great pantheon. That storm, as all must do, comes to a quiet, peaceful end. The idea for this arrangement was given to me by an old friend who played in BR Edge Hill band with when we were kids, Christine Humphreys and to do it for bass trombone, the more I looked at it thinking of Eric Burdon’s voice from The Animals with his first verse nearly too low for him to scrape the lower notes and then the later verses near to top of his register suited. The Animals though in A minor, so for BT I dropped it to Ab minor a real shall we say juicy register for bass trombone plus the added attraction of setting it in the lower octave pedal area to show the instrument off. There aren’t may Bass Trom solos in the rep, so now we add one more!An interview with Eric Burdon revealed that he first heard the song at a club in Newcastle, England, where it was performed by Northumberland folk singer Johnny Handle.The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose him because they wanted to sing something different. The Animals version moves the narrative from the initial point of view of a woman drawn into a life of decline to that of a man whose father is a gambler and a drunk, rather than the adorable person of the previous versions.
