As it is such a popular hit I was surprised to find that the original was by Bob Dylan, from the album ‘Time out of Mind’ from 1997, and also that it has been covered many times by different artists.In writing this for string quartet, I have given the melody to viola and cello as well as first violin, and mostly made use of the harmony in Adele’s version of the song, adding a few dissonances to spice it up a bit. I also include an expansive string interlude section with some double stopping for the viola.The performance is by Capriccio Quartet, who play for weddings, seasonal events and parties in England.Although this quartet is suitable for professional musicians, young players will also be able to manage it with a few adaptations. Firstly, the key of G is a an easy one for strings.The cellist will need to be able to play in fourth position, but only on the A string, and the tempo is slow. There is some double stopping for the viola in the string interlude, but it includes an open G, which can also be left out altogether without losing much harmonic tension. The bowing is a guide only, so take as many bows as make you feel comfortable and use the open strings wherever you need.Let me know if you perform it, and send me any recordings as I love to hear them, especially those from young players. This intense period of loss brought and continues to bring about many feelings of regret in addition to so much more. When my nephew died, my son Jonah, developed an intense anxiety about losing us, his parents. I felt compelled to express my feelings, the fear of my own mortality, the anxiety of leaving behind loved ones, combined with words said and unsaid to those lost. “Love letters� is my gift to the six young people I care most about.
