This song was written for a student of mine, Piper, who is obsessed with Dolly Parton. What a wonderful role model to have as a child! I created a lesson plan around our favorite country singer and her love of children and the desire for everyone to read. I then created a coloring page and this song to add to the lesson. My students just love it and I hope yours will, too.

This modern arrangement of a Dolly Parton classic for Vocal Jazz ensemble will tug at the heart-strings while at the same time challenging your singers with some tight harmonies, a cool, melodic soli section in the middle, and a lovely solo to feature a smoky alto this holiday season. This tune works well with piano OR with rhythm section (brushes on drums and electric or upright bass) and I've performed this with as few as 5 singers.

„Greensleeves is based on an Italian style of composition.

Found in several late-16th-century and early 17th-century sources and preserved at the University of Cambridge.

Christmas and New Year texts were associated with the tune from as early as 1686.

The tune is contained in several of Dowland’s lute manuscripts; in William Ballet’s Lute Book; in Sir John Hawkins’ transcripts of virginal music; in The Dancing Master; The Beggar’s Opera; and in many other books.

 The earliest known source of the tune -Trinity College, Dublin ms. D. I.21, c. 1580 - known as William Ballet's lute book- gives the tune in the melodic minor scale. 

Greensleeves is also often played in a natural minor scale and in the Dorian Mode. 

This arrangement is inspired on the transcripts of virginal music from Sir John Hawkins’.

The piece is appropriate for beginner students or amateurs and without any doubt very pleasant to listen when played by an experienced ensemble. It can be used in concerts and all sorts of spiritual or religious events.

This ever-lovely romantic duet is now available for Cello Trio. The music includes a slightly abbreviated introduction and the full middle section of the aria. The key was adjusted; for this arrangement, the theme is played in D Major (I think you'll find this an improvement over the original in B). Playing time: about 5 minutes. Kiswahili is the national language of Kenyan.All vowel sounds are pure as in Latin.
