This is a collection of 12 Trios (or Duets) arranged for Violin, Viola and Cello, based on melodies of beloved traditional christian hymns.  Melodies are harmonized mostly by interweaving counter melodies.  The Violin and Viola (or Violin II) are, at times, alternating melody and counter melodies, rather than the traditional vocal parts found in church hymnals. The result is a more interweaving flow of melody and counter melody.  The Cello provides the bass, as it also contributes to the counter melodious sound.  A Violin II part has been added to duplicate the Viola, in case a Viola is not available. School teachers will find this is an ideal piece for an end of semester concert, and adult quartets will find it makes a restful and easy-to-play interlude piece in a full-length concert. Being so well-known, this will be an audience pleaser! The key changes in the original are really sublime and enjoyable, and the lush string quartet sound makes the journey to new keys a scenic ride.Like many of my arrangements, this is meant to be accessible and fun, otherwise the music gets lost in a sea of technical worries. I have re-arranged this carol for three violins instead of viola, as a flexible possibility. If you would like to watch a video of a professional quartet playing my arrangement on Youtube, look up my channel by typing Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, O Come Emmanuel. This version is almost identical, though Violin 3 sometimes goes up an octave and passes on the lower notes to the cellist who gets some double stopping! The quartet play it beautifully, but it could also be played by a very young quartet because most of the he double stopping includes one note on an open string. Grade 5 ABRSM could manage it, and possible Grade 3! It will sound mediaeval with the open strings ringing out. The key is a very easy one for strings. However there are a few surprises in the counting so watch out! It isn’t always obvious, but with a few rehearsals you will have a fresh take on a very old carol. It would be great for a string orchestra, or a quartet in an end of term carol service. If you perform it, take a video, even if on a phone, and send it to me on Facebook. The tune has been paired with several different hymn texts, but the most popular one in most churches is Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee.Just six years later, around 1830, a young Polish composer living in Paris, Frédéric Chopin, composed his most famous work, the Nocturne in E-flat major. It’s a piece that’s beloved by pianists for its lovely melody set over a widely spaced accompaniment. The tune gets considerably more complex as it goes on.My setting goes through the melody three times. The first and third sections are fast, and are built on a kind of arpeggio-pattern-with-a-melody-on-top that Chopin was fond of using. The slow section in the middle starts with a total ripoff of the opening of Chopin’s Nocturne; it’s even in the same key! Instead of Chopin’s melody, though, I use Beethoven’s, and develop the tune as Chopin did, beginning plainly, then becoming increasingly ornate.This piece was a blast to write, and I hope you enjoy it, too.
