It has a haunting melody to express how the disciples must have felt.  My SERMON SONGS are a new genre in religious music in which I take sermon notes and turn them into notes in scores which I hope will be sung in places of worship everywhere.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.MLM015). 9 x 12 in inches.Hymn and Fuguing Tune No. 4 was written on 25 December 1944 as a Christmas present for his wife Sidney Robertson Cowell, a brilliant ethnomusicologist who had been instrumental in obtaining the composer's parole and eventual pardon. Cowell did not specify the instrumentation of the Hymn and Fuguing Tune No. 4, stating that it could be performed by any three woodwind or string instruments, or a combination thereof .. The only noticeable adaptation in this setting for two bassoons and contrabassoon is transposing the piece down one octave. While some may question the choice of instrumentation, I will point out that Cowell's final Hymn and Fuguing Tune is a duet scored for soprano saxophone and contrabass saxophone, written for his friend Sigurd Rascher and his daughter Karen Rascher. I feel confident that Cowell would enjoy this setting of his piece! ~Bruce Gbur.

This was done, in part, to make available concert band literature that utilizes jazz/rock instruments (guitar, bass, piano) and improvisation. There are many arrangements of rock and pop tunes available to band directors. While those arrangements sometimes include bass parts they rarely, if ever, have guitar or piano/keyboard parts. Why not? Why not include these parts, even if they are optional? In addition, I’ve noticed that there is very little concert band literature that involves improvisation. Again, why not? I believe that this is the concert band literature of the future – the integrated utilization of electric guitar, keyboards, and improvisation. This piece is my first attempt at such a venture. Having just finished the premier performance of the original jazz ensemble version of 7 to 9 I thought it would be a good platform. Most of 7 to 9 transitions between 7/4 and 9/4. It is a fun, quirky piece with a Latin feel. There is a short 5-bar swing section in the middle for open solos. There is also a one chord solo section later in the piece for less experienced improvisers. The students will really enjoy putting this together, especially with the electric guitar, piano, and bass. It adds a completely new dimension to the concert band as well as an overall excitement. The piece ends with a long building Latin groove with a jam feel to it. The guitarist ends this build with an improvised solo which soars above the rest of the band. It is a fun piece to play but requires a great deal of focus due to the changing meter and odd phrase lengths and entrances. There is only a midi recording available at this time. Departures was written following and during a time when I witnessed a number of people leaving-moving away, taking a different path in life, or leaving this life altogether. A single, sighing motive unites all three sections of this piece. It is heard right away in the flutes, takes a yearning tone in the middle section, and returns wistfully at the end of the piece. As with every departure in life, one is left wondering what the arrival will be like. The first and last sections of the piece are in a moderate to slow 6/8 while the middle is in 4/4. There are brief solos for horn, alto sax, and oboe (cued in clarinet). The recording available here is a real band with some real mistakes that hopefully don't get in the way too much. The piece opens with a strong rhythmic figure played by the entire band based on quartal harmony. Then the main melody enters in a soli passage for the saxes. Ist trumpet must be able to hit a Bb above the staff on this one. Room for solos is provided. It would make a great addition to any program. After teaching music in the PA public schools for over thirty years I found that there were never enough good quality, accessible arrangements available. Hopefully this piece will help remedy that situation. This is an original arrangement for a jazz/swing band with standard instrumentation (5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm section).See all of my arrangements here

This optional descant requires a strong player with nimble fingers and a good sense of rhythm. In a school ensemble, it will be fun for everyone to see the teacher sweat a bit on the fastest sections. But the piece works well without the descant as well...My arrangement captures the constant key changes of the original version, and it's played with a shuffle or swing rhythm (except for the semiquavers - the 16th notes - in the optional descant which are played in straight rhythm as per the original).This arrangement was a firm favourite with the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (HAGO) and their audiences and the soundclip alongside the score on the SMP website is from a recording made live in concert.I hope you enjoy this piece as much as HAGO did!

With the exception of the instrumental break, which is taken by Guitar 1, neither guitar part comes out of first position all that much, and both parts use familiar chord shapes, whichever key the piece is in at that moment...The roles of tune and accompaniment change over at each verse, so there’s plenty of variety for the players and audience alike.This is one of those pieces that a concert audience will be humming all the way home...I hope you enjoy playing this piece!
