One of that set was called Roadside Inn, which I have arranged for Instrumental Solo with Piano Accompaniment. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of contrasts and constant shifts between dynamics, articulations, and themes. I took themes and fragments of themes from the original and re-ordered them into a bit of a rondo form. There are interpretive marks in every measure making it a great piece for auditions to show your technique and interpretation. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. Another feature is the beautiful harmonic interplay between the solo and accompaniment. Both will be familiar to many guitarists as they have featured over the years in a number of Graded Examinations.The Flute countermelody is a new addition, which I wrote so that the piece slotted seamlessly into the background music I played with my flute partner at a friend’s wedding.The Tanz is often mistakenly translated as Dance of the Washerwoman, and it’s also known as Wascha Mesa. The Hupfauf is a companion piece, set in a different rhythm but with ostensibly the same harmonic structure (apart from the Tanz’s Coda which is absent from the Hupfauf).Each dance has two beats in the bar, and the two dances can flow into each other or can be played with a short break. When they run into each other, it makes sense to maintain the two-beat pulse, but if this makes the Hupfauf stressful to play, one can maintain instead the value of the half note (minim), so that the Hupfauf proceeds at a more modest pace.The flute part is in the lower register in Tanz, and in the upper register in Hupfauf to add contrast to the pieces. Feel free to add dynamics, a little more articulation and, for the guitar, possibly some tone color changes, as the phrases repeat.

This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts. Eccomi pronta ai baci Here am I ready for kisses! A rather explicit song about kisses and biting! The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.) Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

All the sections have something to do and there are short solos for the lead players. A tempo range is suggested so that bands with different abilities will be able to attempt this piece.Following the intro, which uses the refrain, the main theme is stated by unison saxes. The brass enter in the continuation of the main theme, with the saxes now in harmony. Unison trumpets then play the refrain and that is followed by the first solo section, which is cued in the lead alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone parts as well as the optional flute. A solo is suggested but the chords are included so that players can try out their own ideas. This section is followed by a brief bridge passage played by the trombones and lower saxes. After that we hear the second part of the main theme again, which is followed by unison trumpets playing the refrain and another short solo section. At the change of key, the trombones and lower saxes take over the main theme at first. Following the final refrain, the outro with its walking bass, cross-stick now added to the rhythm, and syncopated accompaniment beneath a sax or flute solo ensures that this piece really is heading home, although it concludes on a quiet note.The actual notes of these charts are easy, but this piece still demands full concentration and that tight playing so crucial to the big band sound. Unison passages will test intonation. For players new to swing, I hope it will help them to become familiar with this style of music.

It was written for synthesizer, but ten one day I thought ... How about 4 double basses? And later I thought, How about 2 double basses and two fretless basses? And it was good. The drum machine part was left over from the synth days, but I like it. I will upload the drums only mp3, so you can play along. The advanced rating is mostly because the first part goes up to the A above the octave G. The ranges for the other parts are reasonable. The tempo can be 100-120, although 90 might swing more..Enjoy. And directors: if you have 4 basses, here's a chance for them to show off. They'll love it! Or even perhaps 2 cellos and 2 basses! Have fun!
