His 36 Capricci (Études) op. 3 are a standard work in the violin repertoire: this piece is No. 14 from that collection and a piano part has been added by Ippolito Ragghianti under the title In Memoriam. Mitch Sturman asked me to compose a piece to commemorate our mutual friend, composer Elliot Del Borgo, who passed only a week after he had conducted his commissioned works at 2013's Concert of Premieres at Wilson Junior High  School in El Centro, CA.  The result was the Passacaglia and Fughetta in  Memoriam Elliot Del Borgo (1938-2013).     The two sections were originally conceived as two separate ideas, hoping one  would come to fruition. Both sections began to take root, so eventually the two  pieces were combined into a single piece.       At Mr. Sturman's suggestion, the passacaglia begins with the three initials of Mr.  Del Borgo.

Flames of purification or flames of hell?It has been performed by the ensemble ALEA III under Theodor Antoniou at Tsai Performance Centre, Boston University in 2007. Parts of the work have been performed by Athens Bridge Quartet at Faculty Lounge, Deree College under the project Composing the String Quartet of Deree Arts Festival in 2013.Athens Bridge Quartet recorded it ion CD (MOTIVO BQ1070) among Greek Composers Works in 2017.

It makes reference to the idea of a guard of honour through the military style snare and bass drum style. The string parts play atmospheric roles adding tone colours to the overall sonority and building up a rich texture. The piano theme at the start carries through and can be heard in other lines throughout the work mimicking that original three-note descent.

Hedwige Chrétien (15 July 1859 – 1944) was a French composer, appointed professor at the Paris Conservatoire in 1889 where she had previously been a student from 1874. She was a prolific composer, yet not much else is known about her life. Her compositions, about 150 in all, consist of pieces for piano, orchestral and chamber works, songs, two ballets and two one-act operas. One of the most extensive collections of her work in the United States is held in the University of Michigan's Women Composers Collection, which is available on microfilm from there and other libraries. 'Offertoire' dates from 1926 and is taken from a collection of works for organ or harmonium called 'In Memoriam' for use in funeral services but works well as a standalone piece, particularly suitable for memorial events or moments of calm in a programme. Arranged as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide concert band repertoire.
