Maombi na Sifa (in Swahili, for which the diction is similar to Latin) is translated as Prayer and Praise. As the title suggests, the piece begins with a prayerful chorale which leads into a joyous affirmation of life.

Three Trifles for Woodwind Quintet are three bagatelles that are meant to be fun for the listener as well as the players.The first movement is a Tango. It should be played seductively and expressively throughout.The second movement is a Pastorale. It is quiet in nature and features instruments in different combinations in duet and trio form until the final tutti ending.The third movement is a Badinage. Badinage means playful or humorous. As a student in college, I was amember of a woodwind quintet called Badinage. This group was certainly playful, and each of us had our own sense of humor...it was one of the best quintet experiences I've ever had. This movement is in several sections that reflect playfulness, humor and reflection.Three Trifles for Woodwind Quintet was premiered by the Heart of Illinois Woodwind Quintet in February 2012.I hope players and listeners enjoy these trifles.

They performed and recorded together in the 1940s through the 1960s. In the 1950s they produced three duet records: two Ella and Louis albums, and their Porgy and Bess album.I thought the best way to begin to understand their music was to imitate them. I sought to emulate Louis' warm humanity and musical efficiency--just the right note at the right time--and Ella's skillful and musically satisfying scat singing. There is only one quote in I Like Louis and Ella, the opening trumpet statement, but the rest of the music was written as my own impressions of their unique stylings.I am grateful to my former student, Kyle Tolstyka, for commissioning this piece to benefit the horn scholarship fund at Eastern Michigan University. Thanks go to the donors to the scholarship fund in support of this project--my former horn students, Tania Dupuis, Liesl Caarn Hansen, Dr. William Cederquist and his parents, Dr. Jack Cederquist and Meg Kennedy-Shaw. She was a friend and former principal flute in the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra (and Congressional Gold Medal recipient for her service as a WWII Women's Air Service Pilot - WASP). Since the premiere of Requiem in 2009, several of my friends have asked me to transcribe Prayer for their instruments. It has been used for weddings, funerals, offertories, and preludes.Prayer precedes the final verses of Psalm 19 in the Requiem, and it introduces the Psalmist's poignant text on the human weakness of willful transgression. Cleanse thou me from secret faults.... Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer (KJV).I think the fact that I had a bad cold while writing this music added to its effectiveness, for I was feeling quite sorry for myself. The melody portrays my prayer rising ever higher, asking forgiveness for my sins. The plagal (Amen) cadence at the end acknowledges God's gracious forgiveness.Difficulty level: College or advanced high school, requiring full control of intonation and long tones in all ranges.Performance Time: 3' 40.

Upon receiving this commission, Icontacted several of my friends (Jeff McCray, Matt Morris, and Richard Ramey) and requested lists of the mosthighly regarded staples of the wind quintet repertoire. After studying these works, I selected one of my favoritesubjects from Norse mythology as inspiration. Unfortunately, this did not work out as the work wanted to be toolarge and I could not reduce it down to a small chamber work.At that point, I decided to switch gears and find a new source of inspiration, which I found in a poem by James Yatestitled White Tiger Trilogy. I sketched out three movements based on this poem and was, again, displeased with theresulting work. However, I did very much like many elements from the sketches, so I decided to strip the piece downto these elements and construct one single cohesive movement. I chose my favorite line from the original sketchesand made that the central theme in an extended sonata rondo movement. I was finally pleased with this product thatincluded elements from all of the different versions. Dreams of the White Tiger was commissioned by 111 wind quintets in consortium led by my friend Richard Rameyand is dedicated to all of those who contributed to making this project a reality.

Its simple, unassuming character portrays a pretty wild rose that one might encounter in the woods. Less elegant than their suburban garden cousins, the loveliness of wild rose blossoms is short-lived, fragrant and undisciplined. The early sketch was written in 2008, although the work wasn't fully realized until theSpring of 2011. The work is dedicated to my composer friend, Joseph Eidson, whose music largely inspired theorchestration and harmonic material for this piece.Creepy, energetic, dissonant, and playful - these adjectives best describe the work. It begins with the solo timpani thatimmediately sets the sneaking tone for the arachnids that have begun crawling. After a build-up in the woodwinds, thetrumpets introduce the terror with the main arachnid theme. From there, the tune is shared throughout the ensemble, givingnearly every instrument a chance to play the arachnid theme. A contrasting, calmer theme is introduced, simply to give ussome hope and relief that the arachnids will leave. The piece gradually grows more thick and dissonant over time, withwebby textures of woodwinds and muted brass. A short coda with the full ensemble ends the work where the piece reachesits climax.

The piece begins with a chorale alluding to shifting colors in space. The piece then shifts into an energetic homage to a few of my favorite trumpet choir pieces that I came across in my research.

In it the poet puts forward various ideas about life and how to live it. A villanelle is based on repeated lines (a refrain) that connects each stanza as the poem progresses.Theodore Roethke's poetry is known for its exploration of the self through reflection on family and nature; there is plenty of depth and technical skill. His mental illness also caused him to look into the darkness from time to time, recording his inner life in personal poems.Growing up, he spent lots of time in his father's garden and greenhouses and soil and plants and roots and things often turn up in his work. In fact the greenhouse, for Roethke, was a symbol 'for the whole of life, a womb, a heaven-on-earth.'The Waking doesn't contain a greenhouse but it does have symbolism and takes the reader into unexpected places. It is both introspective and positive in its outlook.

A river meant water forlivestock and agriculture, and the possibility of navigating the waterway for commerce. The energetic main themedepicts these sturdy settlers' aspirations and explorations. But the solemnity gives way to the merry fiddle tune of abarn dance. A wistful waltz in a minor mode contrasts their hardship and loneliness. The main theme returns a newkey, signifying determination and confidence. The piece ends as it began, with a query expressed by the violins,pondering what the future may hold.
