Concert band - Grade 4 - Digital Download SKU: IZ.CBS167-S Composed by Samuel Livingston. Score. 20 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #CBS167-S. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CBS167-S). 9 x 12 in inches. The title of this piece is a musical pun. It refers to a Fourth-of-July celebration, with fireworks, games, and patriotic music. But it also refers to the musical interval of a fourth. All of the themes in the piece are built, in some way, around the interval of a fourth. The composition of the piece actually began as a musical idea - piling up fourths and resolving to a major chord. That idea led to the title of the piece and the decision to make the interval of a fourth a prominent feature of all the themes. To convey the idea of fireworks, I used rising sixteenth-note runs in the high woodwinds, followed by a cymbal crash. That pattern appears at the opening, at the ending, and at one other point in the piece. To convey the idea of games, I used a playful theme stated by a solo trumpet and piccolo and repeated in the woodwinds; the second half of the theme is a counterpoint within sections. The patriotic music is suggested by two different kinds of themes - two anthem-like themes (think of America the Beautiful or God Bless America) and a vigorous march, which is introduced in the middle of the piece and repeated near the end. The piece opens and ends with the idea that led to its creation - piling up fourths and resolving to a major chord - accompanied by the sixteenth-note runs in the high woodwinds and the cymbal crash.

Clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, viola, piano - Digital Download SKU: IZ.PDP100 Composed by David Diamond. Score and Parts. 97 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #PDP100. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.PDP100). 9 x 12 in inches. The Chamber Symphony dates from his New York period before he studied with the legendary Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) at the American Conservatory outside of Paris. Like other works from his early 20s, this piece exhibits an extraordinary grasp of structure and overall design within a tonal harmonic language. The unusual scoring (clarinet, bassoon, viola, trumpet, and piano), like so many other chamber pieces written between the two World Wars, shows the influence of Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), who would later become a close friend of the young American. The Chamber Symphony was premiered on 7 May 1937 at the Federal Theater in New York City. Jacques Gordon conducted the WP A Ensemble. Evidently the group was under-rehearsed and Diamond was not happy the performance. Thinking that the fault lay with the composition itself, he consigned the score and parts to a trunk in the attic of the family home in Rochester where it remained for over fifty years. I ran across a reference to the Chamber Symphony in the early 1990s and telephoned David Diamond to ask if I could get a copy of it. Thus began a sporadic exchange of telephone calls and postcards over the next five years. Among other things, we discovered that his parents and my paternal grandmother had come from the same region of Ukraine. Eventually he tottered up to the attic and sent me a copy of the score, with his penciled corrections, and his original parts, which I photocopied and returned to him. I performed the piece with colleagues at Kansas State University and sent Diamond a copy of the recording. He was ecstatic with our performance and told me I wonder why I've suppressed it for all these years? I got to meet David Diamond in June 2000 and we discussed the possibility of trying to get the Chamber Symphony published. He averred that his regular publishers wouldn't be interested owing to the limited market for such a work. A year after David Diamond's death I began my venture into music publishing and contacted Sam Elliott, a close friend of the composer's who serves as the executor for his estate. Mr. Elliott was happy to hear that I wanted to publish the Piece through Prairie Dawg Press and gave his kind permission to do so. I hope that my colleagues will enjoy this work as much as I have and that it will receive frequent performances.

Brass quintet - Digital Download SKU: IZ.CMS164 Composed by Edward Taylor Paull. Arranged by Judith Katz. Score and Parts. 24 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #CMS164. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMS164). 9 x 12 in inches. While doing some research on pre-20th Century American composers, I came across the name of Edward Taylor Paull. In all of my years as a flutist, conductor, and now writer, I never heard of Paull before, but I was curious enough to look for any sound files of his music, and came across both live piano performances and piano roll performances of the Ben HurChariot Race March on YouTube.Edward Taylor Paul, known in some circles as The Other March King was born on February 16th, 1858. In Gerrardstown, Virginia, now West Virginia. While not too much is known about his early years, we do know that his adult years were spent as itinerant musician, instrument sales person, selling pianos and organs, composer, as well as publisher. The Civil War era had Patrick Sarsfield Gillmore as the most famous bandleader and composer. As children of this era, John Philip Sousa and Edward Taylor Paull, were destined to follow in Gillmore's footsteps. While Sousa became successful through his work as both conductor and composer, even attaining the moniker of March King, the road to success and fame was more difficult for Paull. We do know, that by 1878, he was the manager of a music store that sold pianos and organs, eventually going bankrupt, and having to be bailed out by his own father. By 1894, he was the manager of the Richmond Music Publishing Company, and this was the same year that he was issued his first copyright on the Ben Hur Chariot Race March This was originally written for piano, particularly, the parlour piano. This was to become one of many marches and parlour piano compositions by 'E.T, Paull. He may not have been the most skilled musician of his era, but he was wise enough to realize how popular marches became in 1880's and '90's.Paull's compositions were also associated with beautiful color covers. He was fortunate to live in Richmond, Virginia, and the lithography company of A. Hoen & Company, provided him the highest quality and richly-colored art work for his compositions. This company was unique, in that they used a five- color process, which added depth to the color. Thepopularity of marches, plus the great covers, both contributed to the 60,000 copies that the Ben Hur Chariot Race March sold in its first printing. Not bad, for a first composition.Paull found inspiration for his march from the novel Ben Hur, written and published by General Lew Wallace in 1880. Paull dedicated his composition to Wallace, who sold many copies of his book. Eventually, there was a stage play and three film renditions; one in 1907, 1925, and 1959. Some time in the 1920's, the Sousa Band recorded the Ben Hur Chariot Race March, and of course, the MGM, 1925 film version, helped in a renewed popularity of Paull's composition.Edward Taylor Paull died in 1924, and his wife retained the copyright, until it went into public domain. What remains today are a few music examples in the Library of Congress collection, as well as some 78's and piano rolls. While I did my research on this piece, I tried to find any applicable Sousa manuscripts of a possible arrangement, but I could not findany. I usually write for woodwinds, but in this case, I thought that a brass quintet would sound far better. I also chose a moderate tempo, so as not to lose some of the nuances of the original composition.

SATB chorus & piano - Grade 3 - Digital Download SKU: IZ.VMS142 Composed by Bradley Vogel. Texas Choral Directors Association. Score. 16 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #VMS142. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.VMS142). 6.75 x 10.5 in inches.Reginald Heber's hymn Holy, Holy, Holy is representative of the English Oxford revival, a movement that encouraged rich language in both poetry and music. The text is historically aligned with John B. Dyke's tune Nicea, a tune that English hymnologist J. R. Watson suggests carries the poem's long lines effortlessly with magnificent grandeur. This setting seeks to communicate both the mystery and grandeur of God's holiness, being at times distant, and at other times rich and majestic. An overall warmth of sound is desired, to communicate that while God is transcendent, He is also immanent.

Woodwind quintet - Digital Download SKU: IZ.CMF193 Composed by Lee Heritage. Score and Parts. 55 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #CMF193. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMF193). 9 x 12 in inches. To the West Wind is a three-movement work, written in a lyrical, post-tonal style. The title alludes to Ode to the West Wind by nineteenth century British poet Percy Shelley. A breezy classicism in the first movement, Breath of Autumn, gives way to an elegiac second movement marked Grave. This movement, Tangles of Heaven, is dedicated to Toledo's great musical leader Bernard Sanchez who died in October, 2013. Heritage writes, While I was composing the quintet, the news came suddenly - and with a great sense of shock and tragedy - that Bernie had died. Deeply saddened, I realized that the second movement was taking shape as an elegy to a great friend. The flute plays an angular, emotional melody, accompanied by somber chords in the rest of the ensemble. An optimistic energy pervades the third movement, Crystalline Streams, interrupted by moments of lyricism and humor. Throughout the 10-minute work, Heritage explores the unique timbres of each instrument and the rich textures of the woodwind quintet. The Toledo Symphony Woodwind Quintet premiered To the West Wind at the 2015 Festival of New Music at The University of Toledo. Performers were Joel Tse, flute; Michele Tosser-Smith, oboe; Georg Klaas, clarinet; Sandra Clark, horn, and Gareth Thomas, bassoon.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.BCMS172). 9 x 12 in inches.Journey Toward The Eternal Flame is a work, which draws inspiration from Dante's Divine Comedy. It is dedicated to Matthew Ruggiero, a great musician, teacher, friendand the founder of the Boston Woodwind Society. The structure of this work is in three movements each of which correspond to the three parts of Dante's masterpiece. The title of the movements are: Up From the Depths,Journey to the High Mountain and Life Dance, relating directly to Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. In Journey Toward The Eternal Flame I attempt to personalizeand modernize Dante's classic story by relating it to one's individual life journey. Each movement symbolizes the struggle to overcome both internal and externalchallenges with the goal to move closer to finding inner peace and establishing a personal relationship to the divine.

String orchestra & piano - Digital Download SKU: IZ.OMW192-S Composed by Allen W. Menton. Score. 39 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #OMW192-S. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.OMW192-S). 9 x 12 in inches.Nineteenth-century philosophers coined the term hedgehog dilemma to describe the conundrum faced by hedgehogs huddling together for warmth during the winter. If they huddle too closely, they hurt each other with their spines. If they maintain greater distance, they become too cold. The challenge is to find an optimal distance, in which a few occasional pricks are endured in order to get some warmth. Philosophers viewed this situation as a metaphor for human relationships: close intimacy contains the risk of mutual harm. Inspired by the humorous movements of a friend's pet hedgehog, I imagined a fanciful scenario: a disco-loving hedgehog in search of a partner for the 1970's couples dance known as the hustle. Unfortunately, he and his partner keep sticking each other with their spines (represented by the pizzicato in the strings), and his partner abandons him. Our hero sadly contemplates his future, destined to dance alone. However, the music gives him courage, and he concludes with an exuberant dance solo.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CBW1815). 9 x 12 in inches. The inspiration for Flying came on a flight I took to one of my premieres. Usually on those flights I will work on music, sleep, listen to music, or watch a show on my phone. However, on this particular leg of a flight, I happened to spend a portion of the trip staring out the window (which is unusual for me as I am prone to bouts of vertigo for which I have series of techniques to stave it off) admiring the beautiful scenery unfolding in front of me. The opportunity to set this scene to music became a reality when Jim McAllister, director of bands at Lincoln Memorial University and one of my best friends in the world, approached me about a commission. I wrote him an expansive hypermetric piece (over 400 measures in one movement) that reflects my thoughts, feelings, and impressions as I admired the view from sky.Flying was commissioned by and is gratefully dedicated to the Lincoln Memorial University Band and its world class conductor, James McAllister.
