Jazz swing style began in the United States in the 1930s. It was America's favorite popular music form from about 1935 to 1945. This piece is a tribute to that style. Escapade in Swing begins in a moderate, laid-back feel with an ample sprinkling of cool. The piece then changes to a much faster Lively, Driving Swing tempo. A four-measure transition separates the coolness of the first part from the heat of the second part.The second part includes 2-measure written solos for clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and euphonium. Some of these solos are cued in other instruments. Directors can use discretion in assigning the solos: Solo passages can be played as written or ad-libbed, and each written solo can be assigned as a section soli.Escapade in Swing provides ample opportunities to teach lessons in jazz style, jazz notation and techniques, maintaining a steady tempo, intonation, soli and ensemble playing, and improvisation. As was his practice of writing and dedicating marches to real groups, schools, and historical figures, John Philip Sousa wrote and dedicated this march to the National Fencibles.The various fencible groups stayed active throughout the Civil War, and eventually were absorbed into the United States Army and National Guard.

No matter if it's an arrangement of a specific piece, or an original composition, I find myself wanting to view a movie merely for the score.When I was growing up, Westerns were a ubiquitous genre in Hollywood. In addition, New York City had a number of television stations that offered them as well. What all of these films and television programs had in common was, that they always had a strong, catchy and folksy theme. Prime examples were the themes to Bonanza, Wyatt Earp, Wanted Dead or Alive, etc.I wrote The Opening of The West with the goal of having some catchy, folksy and iconic themes that people would remember. I would like to think that this could eventually become an iconic western score.

When I was approached by Susan and Nermis last fall to write a piece for their performance at the 2014 IDRS convention in New York, I think there was a genuine curiosity, possibly coupled with a healthy amount of trepidation, in anticipation of what the jazz guy was going to do. However, as an improviser and composer, I don't really think in terms of categories. I made a genuine attempt to create music borne of its natural environment. I was grateful for the time I spent with the ensemble that helped bring this piece to existence. It was a fluid process in which I discovered (and was told) what worked and what didn't work as I became more familiar with the sounds and capabilities of these instruments.

The use of counterpoint characterizes all four movements; In this regard it is no coincidence that the last is a fugue: the ultimate expression of this compositional technique.But there are also other elements: the lyricism that characterizes the third movement, the rhythmic variety and dynamics that are fundamental elements of the second, and the fairytale setting in which it takes place in the first movement.It is an honor to be chosen as the winner of the 2015 Bassoon Chamber Music Composition Competition, and know that my work has been appreciated by musicians of such high level.

The soloist then states the 16-measure Theme. Eight measures of tutti serve as an in­terlude before Variation I, and a similar interlude precedes Variation II. A longer tutti (twenty measures) leads to Variation III, a slow exploration of the theme in the minor mode. A short cadenza connects this Variation to the Finale, a rollick­ing treatment of Im tiefen Keller in 6 I 8 meter. This is the longest portion of the work and contains two tutti sections which employ a variety of rhythmic pat­terns Vaas employs before bring the work to its conclusion.

His plan was to premiere the piece with his group (he was teaching at Garden City Community College at the time) that next fall. Unfortunately, the strings program was cut at the end of that semester and he never had the chance program the piece. It was premiered in May of 2013 by the Tabor College Symphonic Orchestra under my direction. It was inspired by the painting Twisted Ironies, a beautiful portrayal of a tornado, which was given to the composer as a gift by the artist. The drum set part was added at the suggestion of a string teacher in the community. The piece alternates dramatic lyricism with driving string and percussion statements. There is an optional first violin solo as well as a drum set solo, which will add some flair to you concert!
