No matter if it's an arrangement of a specific piece, or an original composition, I find myself wanting to view a movie merely for the score.When I was growing up, Westerns were a ubiquitous genre in Hollywood. In addition, New York City had a number of television stations that offered them as well. What all of these films and television programs had in common was, that they always had a strong, catchy and folksy theme. Prime examples were the themes to Bonanza, Wyatt Earp, Wanted Dead or Alive, etc.I wrote The Opening of The West with the goal of having some catchy, folksy and iconic themes that people would remember. I would like to think that this could eventually become an iconic western score.

I keep updated on all things astronomical. Though I likely won't live to see it, I greatly look forward to mankind's inevitable exploration of deep space and other galaxies. An aphelion is defined as the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is furthest from the sun. This phenomenon was the inspiration for this concert piece for two horns and string orchestra (or piano). The work begins starkly, with just the horns playing by themselves before a single string drone enters. This is the light of the sun a long ways away. The piece then takes us on a few adventures as it begins its revolution around the sun. The piece ends warmly as we arrive at perihelion (the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is closest to the sun). Aphelion for two horns and string orchestra was commissioned by and is gratefully dedicated to the Chech American Horn Duo (Steven Gross and Jiri Havlik) and the Symphony of the Vines, Greg Magie, conductor, who premiered the piece in January of 2018.

After a short introduction, the oboe enters with the main theme accompanied by a fluttering flute. This quickly leads to a mode change and a quick cadence. The fantasia begins.The fantasia section of the piece is comprised of numerous motives being thrown from instrument to instrument while fragments of the Doxology are heard at all ranges. It's a battle for prominence between the secular motives and the religious theme. A constant sense of racing motion lies beneath the struggle. Which theme will be victorious? Introduction and Fantasia is a woodwind quintet for advanced players not afraid of a challenge. It is a fast-paced piece which requires solid technical skill and a soloist spirit of all five players. It is also an extremely fun piece to play and it is the composer's hope that instrumentalists will find a great amount of joy playing it.

The request was for a piece for violin, saxophone, and piano that was a compromise of my signature lyricism, but also fused different styles that were not my usual tonalities of choice. I decided to fuse 12 tone (a matrix with which I use loosely) with elements of jazz/rock (there is even an improvisation section in the middle built from a modified Coltrane matrix). These fusion elements, combined with the contrast of instrumental colors, make for a unique and entertaining chamber experience. It was even premiered in a bar in downtown Omaha!

He had been coached by Reynolds in a brass quintet for several years while a graduate student at the Eastman School of Music and has always had tremendous respect for Reynolds as a performer and composer. Ponzo requested that the piece exploit the range of timbres available from various instruments and so the work uses five different horns (trumpets in C, B-flat, and E-flat; flugelhom, and B-flat comet). Ponzo premiered Solus on a recital on 12 March 1995 and subsequently recorded it on The Trumpet Music of Verne Reynolds (Mark 4843-MCD). The composer commented that Solus does not have to be performed in its entirety. N.B. Reynolds stated in the holograph of Solus that all the movements are notated in concert pitch.

It was commissioned after the death of a recent graduate, Tanner Born, a euphonium player who participated in the band for all four years of high school. Tanner's parents funded the commission in his memory and asked that I not just make it a memorial piece, but a celebration of his life. Tanner was an avid bowler (illustrated in the rhythmic and celebratory middle section), golfer, and band member.In the Silence is by turns beautiful and contemplative, as well as dark and dramatic, framing an enjoyable and rhythmic affirmation of life. The piece was premiered on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 by the Holcomb High School band, Jim Krohn conducting, with Travis Keller as the euphonium soloist. I had the distinct honor of sitting in Tanner's chair and playing euphonium with the band at the premiere.It was just around a year earlier that Tanner had started attending the church in Garden City where I was choir director in 2009. I was introduced to him and remember a kind face. It was a surreal experience when I was reminded of that introduction after the premiere.You never know where life will take you and how our lives can be intertwined with the lives of others without even being aware of it. It was a wonderful reminder to me that with just a simple twist of fate, the smallest of moments can lead to some of the most powerful moments in our lives.

The holograph does not bear any dedication, but it safe to assume that he wrote the two-movement work for faculty colleagues or students at the Art Center Music School. The score and parts are written at the pitch of the respective instruments, i.e., the two parts sound a whole tone part from each other. With this pitch relationship in mind, Heiden has indicated on the score that this work may also be performed by oboe and B-flat clarinet, two instruments which are also one whole tone apart. The Duo for English horn and Alto Saxophone is a skillfully-crafted piece that clearly shows the influence of Heiden' s teacher, Paul Hindemith. This influence is evident in the well thought-out counterpoint and the fact that Heiden would compose a work for such an unusual combination of instruments. Hindemith was a proponent of Gebrauchsmusik, or Music for Use, works meant to be used by amateur players for their own enjoyment.

Of Wind and Wings portrays the beauty of what it must be like to soar across the skies and feel the wind beneath your wings.Within the Flame is a soulful representation of the fire element. After an opening chorale depicting a look into a small, calm flame, the movement takes off with the flames reaching ever higher and higher. The movement ends as it began, with a calm, soulful chorale.In the Waters Shimmering looks directly into the shimmering reflection of the sunlight in water. A beautiful lyrical theme is passed around the quartet surrounded by various chorales and duets. One last lovely chorale moment brings the movement to its conclusion.To the Land Beyond, a depiction of the earth element, is full of sparking flourishes and rhythmic interest. This movement is a joyous celebration of nature, life, and all its beauty.Originally written as four individual pieces, but always intended to be a set, The Elements can be performed as individual movements or can be performed as a full four movement presentation.
