Deep River is an anonymous African-American spiritual, popularized by Henry Burleigh in his 1916 collection Jubilee Songs of the USA. It is probably the best known spiritual and makes an attractive arrangement  for cello and piano for concert use or religious occasions.

Composed by Ruggero Leoncavallo in 1904, this song was dedicated to Enrico Caruso, who was the first to record it in 1904 with the composer at the piano. Ever since, this piece has become a concert favourite of tenors. This new arrangement for Bb clarinet makes an attractive 3 minute item suitable for recitals and other occasions.

Published by Cornelius Edition (uk) (A0.805661). German Composer Max Bruch (1838-1920) completed this work in 1880 whilst in Liverpool, England. It is dedicated to - and premiered by - Robert Hausmann, who had requested a cello piece from Bruch. The work is styled as an ‘Adagio on 2 Hebrew Melodies’. The first theme, which gives the work its title, imitates the voice of the cantor who chants the liturgy during the evening service on every Yom Kippur. The second theme is derived from English composer Isaac Nathan’s arrangement of Byron’s O weep for Those that Wept on Babel’s Stream and is given a more Schumannesque treatment in the tonic major key. Although originally scored for full orchestra, the work is frequently and effectively performed with piano accompaniment.  This arrangement includes parts for both Bb and A clarinet and would be a very effective recital item.

Commissioned by Julia Carey and Juventas Ensemble, this duet was premiered in early July of 2021 by Kelley Hollis, soprano, James Dargan, baritone, and Julia Carey, piano as a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King. The title of the concert was Yearning to Breathe Free. Julia conceived of the idea of combining Dr. King's I've been to the mountaintop speech with Julia Ward Howe's Battle Hymn of the Republic, however, the rights to Dr. King's speech weren't made available in time. As a result, the composer wrote a poem based on the portion of Exodus to which King alluded in his famous speech, in which Moses is giving a final speech to the Israelites from Mount Nebo. He knows he won't be allowed to cross over, and so he urges his people to be courageous as they continue on without him. The opening is very dissonant, because the images of a terrible swift sword unleashing fateful lightning struck me as terrifying. After commanding the heavens to let him speak, Moses also acknowledges his fear, as well. As the piece progresses, the familiar Battle Hymn Melody appears, as does Go Down Moses.James Dargan, for whom the piece was written, has an unusual range. Alternate notes are provided, as a result. The piece starts at about 1:18:10 of the concert, which can be found on the Juventas website.

The latest version of the score available here has some revisions compared with the recording.
