It was specifically composed in memory of the composer's father, but the work can be used to the reflect any loss, or similar sentiment. The point of departure is the pounding repeated tones (the note D, for Death) at the start of the Lacrymosa of Benjamin Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem; a work which mourned the death of both its composer's parents. Throughout my In Memoriam, the repeated pedal note D is literally ever-present and obsessive, like the looming of death itself, and the percussion take a somewhat military role. The main melodic idea is a twelve-note theme stated at the beginning, though the music is not strictly serial. This theme undergoes various transformations and orchestrations, depicting the many facets of a character who essentially remains themself. More optimistic interludes feature woodwind solos, but the note D always remains. A passage of stark two-part counterpoint is followed by the disintegration of the main theme before a varied return of previous material. Then follows the inevitable dominance of the note D, in crescendo, before the work abruptly ends, frozen still. The work is highly accessible for both performers and audience. Never before in human history have we had direct knowledge of planets orbiting a star other than our own sun. Using observation of star wobbles and other techniques scientists have identified distant worlds with names like Kepler-69c (pictured on the cover of the score in an artist's conception). The fictitious Exoplanet 42 is explored in the listener's imagination guided by the music. The planets numeration is a homage to the late writer Douglas Adams. The piece should be a big hit for Back to School 2015..

Water is serene, soothing, calming, but also chaotic, unpredictable, and at times relentless. Follow the story of the song as you are taken on a journey. A personal experience inspired this dynamic piano solo. It begins with a simple motif that depicts looking out over the ocean which is then followed by getting into the water. The next section, also the longest, goes through the process of losing control to the water and the realization of possibly drowning. The frantic section is followed by a contrasting section, which imitates a lost and worn out feeling. This part demonstrates the feeling of helplessness and the acceptance that it might end, but is then followed by a phrase that is repeated in different keys. Finally, the triumphant section plays the previous phrase once more with fuller chords and a key signature, bringing back structure and sanity to this experience. Though, an accidental in this section leaves the feeling that tension may still be in the experience and that not all was fully well.

The dancers are moving on a fictitious stage – different constellations develop in this room, various relationships between the instruments come into being. The thirteen minute tangos trace these different constellations. They create miniature pictures of the situations, sketches, each of them with an approximate duration of one minute, grouped into two units of six minute tangos each and rounded off with the somewhat longer Canción. Two people are dancing tango. Two instruments are playing for the dance.

Ascending Everest is an exciting new work for Concert Band that endeavors to create the varying moods that I imagine would accompany such an incredible undertaking as scaling the world's tallest mountain.The piece opens with a dramatic minor chord as the behemoth is viewed in person for the first time. It then quickly delves into the business at hand with a mixture of excitement and forboding. The middle section represents the first night's base camp, as weariness and doubt cause the climber great trepidation over what is yet to come. What if I can't do it? What if I fail? The tone begins a subtle change as renewed determination sets in, and the climax rings of victory!This work is for Concert Band, however the standard instrumentation is not strictly adhered to. In my experience, most high school or community bands don't have anyone to play bassoon and so I elected not create such a part. Also, you will note that there is no Percussion 2.
