The harmonic language anticipates many sonorities that have become essential to later popular and jazz piano.  Is this an example of a one hit wonder?  It is undeniably famous, as evidenced by its continued use as background music for television ads of high end luxury goods. I often wonder what Satie eventually thought of this piece. This Gymnopedie is obviously his best known work, so I wonder if it also stands out as having generated the most revenue for Satie. If so, why didn't he replicate its success? Did he understand what he himself had created?  So many questions... I guess I'll have to ask Alexa.

ISBN 9790570483181.Three jazz inflected pop pieces for beginning to intermediate players. Rockin' Downtown: This piece harks back to early jazz rock. Don't swing the rhythm - play them straight. Play the opening statement aggressively, a bit brash. The middle section should be a little more playful. Give the closing two bars some 'shake' in the tone if you can. The Real And Only Blues: This should be played sweet and mournful, with a gentle swing to the rhythms. Treat each line as if it were a sentence, maybe even write words to go with it so that you have something to say with each phrase. Cart Full Of Monkeys: This is whimsical pop, unpredictable, like monkey behaviour. Don't be a complete slave to the tied rhythms in the opening and closing musical statements - use them more as a starting point for playfulness.

After his death, the members of the Beatles brought out a version as a single in 1996 which quickly won a gold record and reached number 4 in the UK Charts, and number 11 in USA.Younger players may be more familiar with the Tom Odell cover of this lovely song, chosen as the John Lewis Christmas Advert Music in 2014.Although I arranged this for Capriccio Quartet who play professionally at weddings and other events, I am marketing it for the Intermediate category. The slow speed and easy key for strings make this an enjoyable song for younger players. As usual, most of my double stopping includes an open string, or a note that can be left out if it is easier. The opening cello melody can be dropped an octave without going below the low viola bass notes. Likewise the first violin can drop the octave at bars 24/25 and also at bars 36/37.Take as many bows as make you comfortable. My bowing is only a guide. Perhaps the octave leaps are difficult to slur effectively. I suggest just playing the higher or lower octave as gentle quavers.I hope you have fun playing this song. Then almost like a modern Power Ballad I play the B' section in a strong swing time. I repeat measures 11 to 14 three times!
