Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.987080 Composed by Eric Paul Nolte. Contemporary. Score. 12 pages. Eric Paul Nolte #566749. Published by Eric Paul Nolte (A0.987080). This piece is one of an album of my contemporary classical compositions. Yes, I too wince at offering you something saddled with this oxymoron--contemporary classical--but this phrase is now an irresistible, commercially recognized category defying any principled protest from the ranks of wounded musicological curmudgeons like me.  The style here employs a tonal palette that celebrates the more or less common practice of composers from J. S. Bach to Ravel, Prokofiev, and the 20th century American songbook.  You will see that I reject Arnold Schoenberg's assertion that by 1910 tonality had exhausted itself, and needed to be reinvented according to an aesthetics that dismiss our scales and harmonies as purely arbitrary human conventions with no basis in nature. On the contrary, I believe that we are endowed by our nature to respond emotionally to our traditional materials of music in the same way as nature equips us to respond to the taste of food and drink. We differ in our taste for savory, sweet, and sour, but it is wrong to say that our very capacity to taste is a merely cultural convention. There is biology, and then physics too! By the same standard, it can't be true that one person's taste for arsenic is as valid as another's taste for beer or kumquats. The major triad is a force of nature, like the sun, wind, and rain! I also like big fat juicy 13 chords, and contrapuntal weaving of melody! I believe the purpose of music is to sway us emotionally, and if it can uplift us too, so much the better! While I am not ashamed to write a bare triad, unadorned by chromatic alterations (much less by clusters of chord collisions) I have nevertheless employed much complicated harmony. Moreover, some passages are written in a spiky harmony that might be analyzed as bitonal, as at the meno mosso section, beginning at measure 112, where the mood I wanted to set inspired me to write the theme in C minor while the left hand climbs up from the bottom of the keyboard in a widely spaced, D-flat 13 arpeggio.  I have composed these pieces with the skills of intermediate to early-advanced pianists in mind. This piece demands the ability to play some counterpoint between two voices in one hand. There is a section that requires one to play moderately fast octaves, but nothing as difficult as the G minor Prelude of Chopin (to say nothing of his harrowing octave Etude from Opus 25!) While there are many polyrhythmic passages, none is more complicated than two-against-three notes. All said, there is nothing here to make your hands (or, I dare say, your ears) bleed. The performing time is around nine minutes and a breath or three. I have a number of videos posted on YouTube.com, I have a website under construction, ericpaulnolte.com, and, since 2011, an occasional blog of my ravings on life, love, and the cosmos, at ericpaulnolte.blogspot.com. You may write me at nolte0125@gmail.com.

Choral Choir - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1262540 Composed by Matthew Nunes. A Cappella,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary. Octavo. 60 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #855564. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1262540). Listen to this piece here          During the spring of 2014 four of Jupiter’s moons captured my imagination with their distinctive features as well as the powerful myths associated with each name. For Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, and Io the musical ideas I would use for each became clearer the more I researched. I chose a mixed choir to convey these ideas as the human voice can convey the awe and unknown of space more convincingly than most instruments. Each movement is intended as a vignette evoking what impacted me the most about each moon: I. Europa          Able to drive Jupiter wild with her beauty, Europa was stolen away by the god and proved bountiful to her captor. The moon may have the potential to support life and is now a primary target of our scientific efforts. This movement celebrates this vitality with driving rhythms supporting a soothing melodic line. II. Ganymede           This movement is a lament for the youth and beauty that once had male and female lovers pining for Ganymede. The moon that shares his name, however, has lost its youth and has been declared geologically dead. Written for the males of the chorus this movement features stacking triads and evokes our past where the highest and most beautiful male voices were adored.  III. Callisto           Nearly killed by her own son after Hera (Jupiter’s wife) spitefully transformed her into a bear, Callisto was a beautiful nymph who Jupiter set amongst the stars as Ursa Major. The moon itself has had its share of harm: in the heavy bombardment period it was impacted multiple times by large objects, the many craters of which are visible. I wrote this movement as if it were a reassuring lullaby and is to be performed by the female voices. A solo oboe* carries the melody over thick chords and is later intertwined with the choir.               - *While oboe is the original intent for this movement a flute or violin would make for an acceptable substitution. IV. Io          Io is a woman who suffered greatly under Jupiter’s lust and the bitterness of Hera’s jealousy. This moon represents the frustrations of suffering with its hundreds of active volcanoes and undying rumblings beneath the surface. Because of this it is one of the most tumultuous objects in our galaxy.  The choir churns forth with motives based off of diminished chords until the pressure built up can no longer be contained – eruption is imminent.- Matthew NunesWindsor, August 2014.

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1423506 Composed by Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944). Arranged by Stephen Levintow. 19th Century,Romantic Period. 49 pages. Cypress Publishing #1004747. Published by Cypress Publishing (A0.1423506). The music of pianist-composer Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944) was highly popular in her lifetime, but mostly neglected afterward. It is fortunately now being rediscovered. Her character pieces, of which she wrote many, display charm and wit, with elegant French romantic sensibility. This set of arrangements for string quartet includes includes selected works composed between 1887 and 1910. It begins with two excerpts from her ballet suite Callirhoë for piano, Pas des Amphores and Pas des écharpes (Scarf Dance), followed by Idylle, from a set of 6 Romances sans Paroles. The next piece, Chanson Russe (Russian Song), if it isn’t based on an actual folksong, is a clever imitation. The set concludes with the gently uplifting Romance in D major. CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. Selections include unusual pieces by both familiar and lesser-known composers, plus standard classical and popular favorites. The goal is to produce high-quality, musically satisfying arrangements faithful to the composer’s original material, yet sight-readable in most cases by working professionals or intermediate to advanced students. The full range of normal string technique is employed, while avoiding unnecessary technical complexity. Melodic material is distributed throughout the four voices where appropriate, to maintain listener and performer interest. All parts and scores are set in Sibelius© software format, with careful attention to legibility and page turns.

Published by Les Productions d'OZ - Digital (ZZ.DZ-4343). La frontera alucinada alludes to the imprecision of the various emotional territories in which the reality of pain is confused with the hallucinated madness of happy serenity. It is a music that gradually melts as if it were wax based on variations or repetitions of an obsessive and hopeless cell that serves as a bridge between the various new elements that emerge with forms of pain or serenity. Music that is difficult to understand that aims to leave the listener with multiple unresolved questions. The work is a tribute to George Crumb and it is dedicated to Cristiano Porqueddu.- Marco Smaili, Alicante 2024La frontera alucinada évoque l’imprécision des diverses zones émotionnelles où la réalité de la douleur se confond avec la folie hallucinée d’une sérénité heureuse.C’est une musique qui se «fond progressivement comme de la cire» basée sur des variations ou répétitions d’une cellule obsessionnelle et désespérée qui sert de pont entre les différents nouveaux éléments émergeant avec des formes de douleur ou de sérénité. With so many worries currently afflicting our world, here is hoping music can help to heal our world, even if it is only a tiny bit. This song is dedicated to all the medical staff around the world helping to keep the COVID-19 virus at bay. The image of a lotus flower peeking out through a murky pond was taken from Pixabay, but it is slightly special as the tag mentions the image was taken in Hubei, the provincial epicenter of the COVID-19 virus.
