These three dramatic but humorous episodes in the life of the great king, to texts by Thackeray and the composer, tell us first of all how the elderly King Canute was tiring of life as, no longer young, he even yawned while his favourite male voice choir was performing. The second movement tells of all the victories he had won - but, as the third movement tells us, there was one thing left to do - conquer the sea!  Sadly, however, the sea disobeyed his commands, and 'King Canute is dead and gone, but the legend still lives on'. The story is untrue, of course, but if it happened, though it probably didn't, it would have been in the vicinity of the Battle of Ashingdon, near to the town of South Woodham Ferrers, Essex, UK - where the songs were first performed by the South Woodham Ferrers Male Voice Choir. It is a beautiful song and will go down a storm at concerts. My choirs loved singing this too! The melody is shared mainly between Soprano 1 and Alto 1 but is full of interest for the other parts. I would put the level of this arrangement at easy to intermediate and suitable for community and other types of non-auditioned choirs as well as for auditioned choirs.

Listen to this piece here          During the spring of 2014 four of Jupiter’s moons captured my imagination with their distinctive features as well as the powerful myths associated with each name. For Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, and Io the musical ideas I would use for each became clearer the more I researched. I chose a mixed choir to convey these ideas as the human voice can convey the awe and unknown of space more convincingly than most instruments. Each movement is intended as a vignette evoking what impacted me the most about each moon: I. Europa          Able to drive Jupiter wild with her beauty, Europa was stolen away by the god and proved bountiful to her captor. The moon may have the potential to support life and is now a primary target of our scientific efforts. This movement celebrates this vitality with driving rhythms supporting a soothing melodic line. II. Ganymede           This movement is a lament for the youth and beauty that once had male and female lovers pining for Ganymede. The moon that shares his name, however, has lost its youth and has been declared geologically dead. Written for the males of the chorus this movement features stacking triads and evokes our past where the highest and most beautiful male voices were adored.  III. Callisto           Nearly killed by her own son after Hera (Jupiter’s wife) spitefully transformed her into a bear, Callisto was a beautiful nymph who Jupiter set amongst the stars as Ursa Major. The moon itself has had its share of harm: in the heavy bombardment period it was impacted multiple times by large objects, the many craters of which are visible. I wrote this movement as if it were a reassuring lullaby and is to be performed by the female voices. A solo oboe* carries the melody over thick chords and is later intertwined with the choir.               - *While oboe is the original intent for this movement a flute or violin would make for an acceptable substitution. IV. Io          Io is a woman who suffered greatly under Jupiter’s lust and the bitterness of Hera’s jealousy. This moon represents the frustrations of suffering with its hundreds of active volcanoes and undying rumblings beneath the surface. Because of this it is one of the most tumultuous objects in our galaxy.  The choir churns forth with motives based off of diminished chords until the pressure built up can no longer be contained – eruption is imminent.- Matthew NunesWindsor, August 2014.

The music of pianist-composer Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944) was highly popular in her lifetime, but mostly neglected afterward. It is fortunately now being rediscovered. Her character pieces, of which she wrote many, display charm and wit, with elegant French romantic sensibility. This set of arrangements for string quartet includes includes selected works composed between 1887 and 1910. It begins with two excerpts from her ballet suite Callirhoë for piano, Pas des Amphores and Pas des écharpes (Scarf Dance), followed by Idylle, from a set of 6 Romances sans Paroles. The next piece, Chanson Russe (Russian Song), if it isn’t based on an actual folksong, is a clever imitation. The set concludes with the gently uplifting Romance in D major. This arrangement was originally done for flute quartet. It has a coda of another Sullivan hymn, Onward, Christian Soldiers, which I liked and added. Unfortunately, the Lutheran Church I did the arrangement for, had removed that hymn from their hymnal as being too militant and were not amused by my addition. If it is played at a religious service, maybe end it at measure 70.

The last song in this set was composed by Ingunn Bjarnadóttir, a uniquely gifted Icelandic woman who made up tunes from her earliest childhood without any formal musical training at all. Later, her husband wrote down the melodic lines, and she gradually came to the attention of Iceland's musical society, where her large output now commands great respect among those who know their country's cultural history. Her melodies lend themselves well to conventional harmonic treatment, yet their unique character has something ethereal about it, as if it refuses to be tied to the conventional rules of mere academic musical logic. This tune, for example, ends in a key very remote from its beginning, yet it follows a perfect logic of its own! The arranger is indebted to the composer's daughter for her generous permission to use Ingunn's lovely melody, Æskuheit.
