This song is a good introduction to caribbean feel and groov.If you´re a beginner then the key to playing this arrangement is simplification - skip the small details and focus on the most essential stuff. The more advanced level = more details. I´ll cover it below for every part.Bass (the easiest part)The harmony of the song is Bm-G-A-D, one chord per bar. The bass is playing mostly rhythmic variations on the chord triads. If the main part is too difficult, then focus on just the first notes of the bars. Cilia Black states that, rather than declining outright to record the song, she decided to set conditions: I said I'd only do it if Burt Bacharach himself did the arrangement, never thinking for one moment that he would. When the reply came back from America that he'd be happy to...I said I would only do it if Burt came over to London for the recording session. 'Yes,' came the reply. Next I said that as well as the arrangements and coming over, he had to play piano on the session. To my astonishment it was agreed that Burt would do all three. So by this time, coward that I was, I really couldn't back out. The song was a major hit for Cilla Black (UK) and Dionne Warwick (US). This arrangement includes the lyrics.

This version of March of the Toys contains parade effects as if a band were marching by, starting up, then receding, all with only one violin and one cello!  The flourishes are the same as the end flourish and do not add difficulty.  The fast break is included.  Stylistic variations are included (which you can ignore if you prefer).  A special version of the fast-high scale is also included, reduced to triples in places so that only two instruments can play it (Tchaikovsky used 7 orchestra sections playing 4 notes each).  So, yeah, a little tricky, but YOU CAN do it.  And . . . wow.  Your listeners will remember it forever.  Good luck!

The piano is the main feature of this piece, utilising a granular piano effect and a sample of locusts to give this piece a mysterious atmosphere with some familiarity.How to play:While this piece can work in a band setting, I feel that the piano player is the most active and will need some good friends who are ok playing very simple lines with little variation if they wish to play the other parts.I feel it's best to set this up for a solo performance with a little more effort and preparation. I think it's best to use a midi-controller keyboard with both a sustain pedal and expression pedal. I suggest programming the bass with a click track or metronome, the locusts and granular effect will need their volume to be assigned to the expression pedal so you can bring them in and out as needed. If you ever need a break from the soundbyte theology found in so many contemporary Christian lyrics, why not revisit the words of Isaac Watts (1674-1748), who could stretch a single coherent thought across multiple verses of his hymns? Watts was a prolific writer on many subjects, including geography, astronomy, ethics, and psychology. His book on Logic became a standard university text, being used at Oxford for over 100 years. But his greatest desire was to assist Christians in the worship of God and it is his hymns for which he is best remembered today.These old words are here set to new music which represents a blending of three different traditions: First, and most obvious, is the rustic sound of early American shape-note singing. Second is the strong linearity of 13th century Ars Antiqua voice leading, in which each part was more or less independent. And third is my own fondness for mixed meters and sonorities built on fourths and seconds. Yet it all works somehow: these are actually very singable hymns once the choir has acclimated to the style. Most fall comfortably into a simple diatonic language and would present no jarring problems for the listener. Five of the hymns are for standard mixed voices (SATB); one is for men’s voices (TTB); one for women’s (SSA) and the last, a Doxology, is in six parts (SSATTB) with a florid threefold amen. There is admittedly a certain sameness about these settings; perhaps it’s best if they are not all sung in one go, cover to cover. Taken individually, however, there is no reason they couldn’t make for a refreshing change from the usual church anthem, and a group of three or four could easily find a place on a choral recital program.
