This little suite for beginner string orchestra aims to put into practice as many of the different technical aspects of the ABRSM Grade 1 exam as possible, whilst remaining a fun piece to play!  The cheerful first movement is in D major. There is some use of open string double stops and a chance for the 2nd violins to show off their left hand pizzicato, whilst the legato cello melody in the middle section explores the 1234 chromatic finger pattern. The short second movement, which is really no more than a brief interlude, is in A major, and provides the opportunity to focus on controlling slurs and legato bowing. 4th fingers instead of open Es in the 1st violins are desirable but not compulsory! Finally, the third Latin-inspired movement is a syncopation-filled exploration of the E minor natural scale. If you have some percussion instruments at hand please feel free to get creative and add them in wherever you like! The piece can be played without double basses, but if there are none it might be an idea for one desk of cellos to cover the bass part in the first movement middle section. 3rd violins are only necessary if there are no violas, or if violas need an extra boost!

This is a loop station composition for electric violin that I composed for my live-looping duo, The Khromatiks, in 2013. Doing my part to increase the available repertoire for extended range violins out here on the internet!I originally recorded this tune on a 7-string electric violin with a Boss RC-30 loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 2 separate tracks or sections with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, Boomerang III, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you use an octave pedal to record the low bass lines. A standard 4-string can also work, although some phrases will have to be transposed 8va.A little about this tune: the head melody is a basic lydian dominant motif that gets displaced forwards or backwards by a sixteenth note on each iteration. In Nashville Number System, we call this sort of syncopation a push, which inspired the title. This idea transitions into a B solo section with a latin songo groove. This is a great tune for practicing tight rhythmic syncopation, or for developing solo ideas on modal scales!With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo. If you have a looper capable of syncing to a click track, you could also try adding bass (plays the bottom line of loop 2 only) or guitar/keyboards (read the chord symbols as a lead-sheet). The sound track was brought to us by none other than Finneas O'connell, Billie Eilish. This arrangement of the main song on the soundtrack, Nobody like U, is for piano, voice and guitar. The key is in Am With this arrangement you will get the piano and vocal part, 7 pages, and the voice part with chords/lyrics separately acting as a lead sheet which is useful for all types of performers who do not necessarily need the whole piano part. This keeps paper usage at minimum and means the whole song can be laid out side by side without the need for page turns. The piano arrangement is very easy, mainly a heavily repeated chordal rhythmic motif. The most difficult part is in the left hand for the change in the bass line. There is also a large section of the song that is purely percussive in the backing. In one instance this is simply marked indicating when the piano drops and the accompanist could clap/beat box in this section if desired or if playing with a drummer just let them have the spot light. The song also finishes with only percussive backing, for this final section to give an idea of this I've changed the rhythm to a simple staccato beat on 2 and 4 so that if this was performed with only a pianist and singer there was some appropriate melodic backing that seemed percussive through the use of the staccato. The vocal part is close to the audio however I have omitted most of the vocal runs that happen between sections. These can be included in the performance should the singer decide to. I have only included the opening vocal run passage. In some areas I have simplified the melody, retaining the rough melodic shape but simplifying the rhythm. These can be sung as written or adjusted to the performers taste. I hope you enjoy this arrangement of Nobody Like U for piano, vocal and guitar and I hope it serves as a versatile arrangement for many purposes. So leave your days of sight-reading through piano scores behind and give your quartet some firepower with this hard hitting chart, that will surely enable your ensemble to do at least a little justice to this legendarily emotional banger from Ireland's finest! Bono's soaring vocal melodies on this tune offer more than enough material on their own to tug at an audience's heartstrings, but in this chart you'll also find faithful adaptations of the iconic guitar & bass parts (performed by cello & viola) that truly make this song one of a kind. Using extended string techniques like chopping & strum bowing, you'll feel as if you're rocking out with the band... with no need to hire those annoying extra musicians. But as we all know, strings have much more to offer dynamically than simply plodding along mimicking a rock band, so I've taken several select moments in this chart to break away briefly from those driving grooves into more open, contemplative textures, truly allowing this instrumentation to shine in its own unique way. All of that said, maybe rhythmic string playing isn't your thing and you just need a chart that classical string players can read through on a cocktail gig where the buyer clearly doesn't pay attention to the lyrical content of their song requests. If that's the case, I've provided a couple alternate figures at the back of the book that can be used to replace the percussive stuff in the viola part, making it much simpler without sacrificing too much of the energy. OR if you want to go even further, maybe you DO want to hire that band after all so you can just relax and play some melody lines. The poem receives a great deal of discussion on its meaning, contemplating if the words are hopeful, mourning, rife with humility, or a statement of resignation.My take on the poem is that it is of deep hope and contemplation, declaring that the world is held in the warm embrace of summer and that life if being kind. Most strikingly, though, is the last line of shadows on the stars, forming the crux of the text. It is the moment when the words change perspective from the stars casting shadows on the earth to the earth casting its shadows on the stars.Regardless of what that may mean exactly, its elegance caught me, and its inherent imagery helped guide the formation of this piece. Unlike Lauridsen or Barber–neither of whom I am claiming to bear resemblance–this work actually has no text, and is driven more from the diction and isolated events present in the text rather than an interpretation of the poem as a whole.
