The idea being that if someone in every family could read the most basic piano score, then the rest of the family could gather around the piano (usually an inexpensive upright) and sing along in the days before records, cassette tapes, CD’s, Radio, Television, iPods, YouTube etc. Nowadays, the few people who can sight-read at the piano are more musically literate, often being able to read and play classical compositions by Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. They, therefore, deserve more interesting and rewarding arrangements of these wonderful musical treasures of the 1800’s. Furthermore, since these arrangements for piano and voice can also be played as piano solos, the piano scores are designed to be of enjoyable musical interest on their own; that is, orchestrated for the piano as if they were sketches for an ensemble of instruments. These arrangements can also be considered theatrical improvisations on the original sheet music. Following the best improvisational guidelines, they are based on 1) the implications of the title; 2) the meaning and words of the lyrics; 3) the melody; & 4) the harmonic pattern. For example: Oh, Susanna! is obviously a humorous nonsense song and is therefore arranged to sound carefree, jaunty, and joyful. Also, since the singer refers to my banjo on my knee, the piano arrangement imitates the sound of a banjo as it is played for singing and dancing, strumming its rhythmic way through the simple harmonic changes. Amazing Grace - Intermediate piano solo Arranged by Elena FortinLately, I have been working on arrangements and videos of songs that I consider to be important either in the way they touch listeners, in how they are used, or if they have stood the test of time.Amazing Grace is a beautiful, traditional hymn with well-known lyrics penned by John Newton. The original hymn was published in 1779, with the words written in 1772. This piece is one of those songs that can be used for many different reasons. It is used in worship services, as a hymn of praise and faith, as celebration of life lived, and as a prayer of thanksgiving.  My arrangement is for the intermediate player. The arrangement is simple, but should be played expressively. Each repetition of the hymn is slightly different, with the second repetition using the harmonic structure but introducing a new invented melody by me. (You can hum the melodic line of Amazing Grace over the top of this second repetition and you'll see what I mean!) The very last repetition is played allargando which means slightly slower, and more broadly. Enjoy those left hand octave notes and full chords! If you look at the left hand, you should be able to see that the top notes form a chromatic scale from Ab, and that the bottom notes form a chromatic scale from Gb. If you can remember this, you shouldn't have to worry about figuring out each accidental.The last chord in the right hand might look hard, but it is really just a B major triad (B, D#, and F#) with an added F. If you're wondering why the chord sounds so bad, try and relate the ending to the title.
