Juan María Solare: Post this and neo that  a meta-toccata for solo xylophone    Post this and neo that means, in this piece, the coexistence of different musical languages and techniques, such as toccata, blues, baroque or atonal (twelve-tone harmonic fields) – and everything with a tango nuevo flair.  Sometimes, this term is slightly pejorative and usually heard when conservative concert-goers and true-music lovers grumble about the proliferation of superfluous aesthetic movements with prefixes such as post- or neo-, or suffixes such as -ism or -ologie. Choosing this expression as title is actually an irony at both (conservatism and pluralism) and as such mainly a general mockery at the urge of putting labels (possibly in order to sell better).  If you analyze carefully, you will find styles and devices such as post-Prokofiev, meta-tango, neo-renaissance, nano-variations, turbo-harmony, ultra-melodism and hyper-rhythmic in this piece of crypto-music. If you analyze even more carefully you will find nearly everything. And if you omni-analyze it, you will find the supra-truth.  Anyway, what I found is eight times the same structure: A A B A (whereby B is an integrated contrast); the macro form also follows this idea of two similar statements, one quite different, reappearance of the first statement varied but recognizable.  Post this and neo that for xylophone was composed in Bremen (Germany) on February 5th and 6th, 2014, encouraged by a call for works made by Samuel Stokes. Spancil Hill continues to be a very popular Irish ballad with listeners and guitar players. I have included the chords so that you can use them as an easy accompaniment for a singer or other instrument such as recorder, violin or flute that takes the treble clef melody part. Use the Intro of this arrangement as a basis for the R.H. fingerstyle pattern for song accompaniment . Also weave in and out of picking melody and bass patterns with the guitar fills I include in the score to add interest to the accompaniment . Check out 'The Dubliners' version on YouTube and if you want to play along you just need to place the capo at the 5th fret on your guitar and play the same chords as in this arrangement. I also recorded the audio clip  with the capo on the guitar at the 5th fret. Listen to this intro to Spancil Hill and you will get a good idea how to accompany the song using a flat picking technique of plectrum picking out the bass notes interspersed with a  Down Down Up Down strum plectrum rhythm. Calaf offers her another chance by challenging her to guess his name by dawn. (As he kneels before her, the Nessun dorma theme makes a first appearance, to his words, Il mio nome non sai!) If she does so, she can execute him; but if she does not, she must marry him. The cruel and emotionally cold princess then decrees that none of her subjects shall sleep that night until his name is discovered. If they fail, all will be killed. As the final act opens, it is now night. Calaf is alone in the moonlit palace gardens. In the distance, he hears Turandot’s heralds proclaiming her command. His aria begins with an echo of their cry and a reflection on Princess Turandot.

At the end of July 2016, I was in my hometown Canberra for a job interview. I was sick as a dog with laryngitis for the interview and audition. Imagine me trying to take a choir rehearsal with no voice? It was never going to happen for me and I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. Halfway back to Sydney on the bus, I get a text from my dear friend Emma. I don’t remember the exact words, but the gist of it was No easy way to say this. We lost Jeff today. Jeff being Emma’s beloved husband and all round awesome human. It was truly devastating. I didn’t know what to do. I felt terribly guilty for thinking of myself and my employment failure all day instead of thinking of Emma and Jeff, even though that was completely irrational. Didn’t want to call because I knew she’d have enough stuff to deal with. Couldn’t turn around cos Public Transport. Had lost the ability to formulate sentences because in that situation, there are no words. So I fell back into the place where I express most clearly. Music. And into my native habitat, the piano. Passacaglia came flowing out very quickly. I hardly stopped to edit. Normally I would try to plan a composition a bit, so that it’s structurally sound. I didn’t do that but somehow it just emerged fully formed.  I sent it to Emma who asked if I could come and perform it at the memorial service. But I couldn’t make it to the memorial. And you know what the saddest thing is? I can’t even now remember why, which means it can’t have actually been that important. Instead I created an electronic file of the piece, with more sounds than just piano. I hope it worked ok. Emma told me later that after the funeral when she suddenly found herself alone, she just played it over and over again on repeat.  So I guess it did its job, but now it’s ready to make its own way in the world in its original version for solo piano. I hope it can bring some solace to others in grief

Inspired by the fifth chapter of the Book of Revelation, the music vividly depicts the duality of the lion/lamb character (hence the plurality of the title), and the ample use of mixed meter and solo opportunities (particularly for flute and percussion) will offer an engaging challenge to most high school ensembles. Although this is the middle movement of a three-movement work, it works in its own self-contained world. It was this sense of duality that persuaded me to keep the s at the end of Revelation in the title – it is as if there are multiple revelations to be found within both the scripture and my musical interpretation of it. In the book of Revelation, the prophet John is sharing an apocalyptic vision to a group of churches in Asia as a means of hope – even though these people were being persecuted for their beliefs, John promises the rapture in which God will save the believers and destroy the nonbelievers. The fifth chapter begins with John’s ascension to heaven, and it concludes just before the Christ-like Lion of Judah breaks the seals of the scroll that will unleash the rapture. While this is intended to be a message of hope, it will also bring about cataclysmic death and destruction. Herein lies the duality – how can a message of hope come as the result of such a violent outcome? Movement II (of three) corresponds with only verse 6, and it is more of a character study than a programmatic narrative. It examines the Lion of Judah character, which is portrayed at first as an overwhelming and aggressive figure after it approaches from the distance in the hazy beginning section. This character is also depicted in the scripture as a lamb, though, and this is reflected in the piece’s latter half, which is a softer reimagining of the Lion character’s material. The Lion and the Lamb are not two different characters but, rather, different sides of the same character. It is this duality that drives the movement, and it explains the connections between these otherwise distinct sections. This movement was originally performed by the CCPA Wind Ensemble in April 2010 when it received first place in CCPA’s wind ensemble composition contest.

Gnome`s Dream revealed in the2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry.    Gnome`s Dream was designed to be performed by a group of five artists, or even seven, nine, one thousand or more!  Any kind of diatonic Harp can be used to perform this piece.  When playing the harp with the rest of the ensemble it might be better to perform it mostly as it was written.  In the absence of a Double bass, than should the cello take its part. In the case of an ensemble with more artists where we have already formed a bowed stringed orquestra, The double bass while playing the introduction of the piece remains a soloist and it will than be reenforced with a cello while the other bowed instruments are also playing. It would be good to tune the E string of the double bass down to a D but if this is not possible than simply play the lower „D notes one octave higher. It is a perfect piece for a mixed group of early beginners and „early soloists, it is very easy to perform. It can be played by a group of five artists, as well as a complete string orquestra with harp. Some interpretation symbols where used in the score as a performance suggestion. Most of the score is left virgin to the interpretation of the artists involved, particularly the use of bowing and fingering. It is a very flexible piece that can be used in all kinds of events. The score For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entrywas written on Finale.  The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was produced with samplers from Garritan, conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score.
