This little fugue is one of Bach's most famous and beloved organ works.  Reimagined for woodwind quintet, it is a challenging and fun setting for this fugue.  The five instruments take turns entering with the subject of the fugue, and interplay back and forth with the other instruments.  The timbres of the different instruments add a whole new dimension to this already fascinating work by J.S. Bach.   I considered the need to breathe for each of this wind instruments, which obviously wasn't an issue in the original version intended for organ.  This piece would be appropriate for advanced high school students, college students, or professionals.  It would do well in a chamber music recital, a church,  or an online virtual concert. This work was written in the first months of 1942 while Tailleferre was living in Grasse, in the socolled« Free Zone » of occupied France during the Second World War and was completed just asTailleferre was forced to flee France with her daughter. As the wife of Jean Lageat, who had been thesecretary of the French socialist Léon Blum during the « Front Populaire » period just before the Warand who was at that time in the US working against the Vichy Government, and as someone who wasnot unvocal about her political views, this could not have been a comfortable situation. Tailleferre left arecord of what she experienced during this period in an article written for the American music journal «Modern Music » which she wrote shortly after arriving in America in the Spring of 1942 :« Notwithstanding their staunch spirit of resistence, the people under German rule today areincreasingly bowed down under their burdens. By achieving the physical decline of the French, theNazis hope that spiritual collapse will ensue. However, after two years of quasi-famine, France remainspround and great, although the necessity of liberation grows daily more urgent.....For an artist to workunder these conditions is almost impossible. The mere effort of subsisting wastes time and absorbsenergy ; The means to work are also lacking.....Musical composition is made practically impossiblethrough lack of music paper. For more than a year, I sought in vain to find paper in Lyon, Marseillesand Nice on which to copy an orchestral score...Two years of experience under German rule havetaught me that all expressions of pride, dignity, spirit , aspiration of the human will can be made onlyclaudestinely. It is a historical truth that the human mind makes its greatest progress under freedom ».Under such circumstances, it is a miracle that this work exists at all. The three movement work wasdedicated to the famous Marguerite Long, for whom Tailleferre had already written several short worksfor piano solo, and François Lang, a pianist who was closely linked with the Group des Six and whohad performed in the première of the 1934 Concerto Grosso for Two Pianos, 8 Solo Voices, SaxophoneQuartet and Orchestra and for whom Tailleferre wrote two cadenzas for concerti by Mozart and Haydn.The work opens with sunny, optimistism in a mood similar to the opening movement of the ConcertoGrosso, but quickly the mood changes to more dramatic themes. The second movement seems tosubjectively express a rupture with the past and a tragic melancholy. The final third movement isextremely dramatic and almost frightening with it’s force.When Tailleferre left France in the Spring of 1942, having been warned by a neighbor that she wasgoing to be arrested if she didn’t leave immediately, she left the score in a two-piano version, probablydue to the fact that there was no music paper to be had to copy the score. When she returned to Francein 1946, she learned that François Lang had been deported to Auschwitz where he died. Musical life inFrance had been completely changed by the War years. Tailleferre put the work aside and forgot aboutit, perhaps wanting to forget the hardships that she had lived through and the loss of many of her friendsassociated with these years.Tailleferre's version for two pianos is published by Musik Fabrik and the work may be performed inthat version. It is clear however, that the work was intended to be orchestrated and the editors hope thatthe present orchestration will allow the work to finally be presented as Tailleferre conceived duringsome of the darkest years of the Twentieth century.

The first movement, Allegro marcato, is a musical rendition of Joseph’s daily commute into Manhattan where he frequently visited dime stores, junk shops, used book stores, the New City Public Library, art galleries, movie houses and restaurants like Bickford’s and Schraft’s.The Enchanted Wanderer is a collage work on paper by Joseph Cornell – a tribute to Hedy Lamarr. Hollywood fascinated Cornell. He made several box constructions as tributes to movie stars like Lauren Bacall, Jennifer Jones, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, etc.Avian scherzo. Many of Cornell’s boxes featured cutout pictures of parakeets, parrots and cockatoos. Habitat Group for a Shooting Gallery is an especially evocative box of his aviary series. There are four birds in it, amidst other odds and ends. A number is attached to each one. There is a crack in the glass encasement – as if hit by a bullet. Blood splatters from the head of one of the birds. . In between the shooting gallery music, there is a Trio: a requiem for the dead cockatoo.Allegro ... à la Can-can. Cornell attended the ballet fervently. He made many box constructions inspired by ballet dancers: Fanny Cerrito, Marie Taglioni, Tamara Toumanova, Zizi Jeanmaire, Allegra Kent, etc. A Pantry Ballet for Jacques Offenbach is a very funny box with five red plastic lobsters in tutus. I provided a polka as background music. This movement is dedicated to Allegra Kent – a friend and confidante of Cornell.Joseph Cornell was an active member of the Christian Science Church for all of his adult life. He attended services regularly, and taught Sunday-school classes. For a while he even worked as an attendant in a Christian Science Reading Room in Great Neck, NY. In the Christian Science Hymnal I found several hymns written by the founder, Mary Baker Eddy, set to music by a number of different composers. I wrote a new tune to her hymn, Shepherd, show me how to go. The last movement, Apotheosis, is a theme and variations on this tune. If you aren’t familiar with it, the Fibonacci Sequence is a series of numbers in which each number is the sum of the two that preceded it. So: 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 and so on. In nature, the Fibonacci Sequence ratio is seen in flower petals, seed heads, pinecones, pineapples, cauliflower, tree branches, shells, spiral galaxies and more. It is closely related to the Golden Ration of 1.618, another magical number that is visible around creation and has guided artists, composers, architects, etc.Using the time signature of 3/4, a chord progression of 8 chords, moving down by 5ths, etc. the mathematical elements and form of this beautiful sequence is embedded in the music. It isn't terribly fast and it is a matter of taste how fast this should be played. I used to start every reception I played with this tune. After many years I finally wrote down the arrangement. I hope you get to play it as much as I did. If the ornamentation is too challenging play without. I reckon anybody with beginner/intermediate skills can play this. There are no lever changes.It can of course be played on the piano with different fingering. .

Performance Notes: Dissonance is very common in this piece. It will not help the orchestra if the players cower away from it, rather than play it confidently. Don't second-guess whether or not the right notes are being played. Be sensitive to whoever has the moving line, as it is passed around the orchestra. At measure 22, the Violas and Cellos should soar above the violins. At measures 26-30, everyone in the orchestra should be playing as loud as humanly possible (go crazy, go bananas), while still remaining sensitive to the moving melodies; this is the composer's signature theme. Be mindful of the key change at measure 35 (F Maj/D Min to B-Flat Maj/G Min). In the end, Violins, Violas, and Cellos should decrescendo to literally nothing on the tremolos. The basses should emphasize pizzicato, but play it lightly, rather than thunderous. The chords in the Harp and Piano should also be brought out.

He wrote it while with Depeche Mode, but recorded it in 1982 after forming the duo Yazoo with Alison Moyet. It was released as Yazoo's first single on 15 March 1982 in the United Kingdom, and became an instant success on the UK singles chart, peaking at number 2. It was released again in 1983 in an a cappella version by the Flying Pickets and became the UK Christmas No 1 that year. Vince Clarke originally wrote the music for the song on a guitar, and transposed the riff into synthesizer notes. This is clear from the chord structure so I have arranged it using a constantly descending bass for the first two verses. For the final verse, to give a sense of drama which is clear from the lyrics, I have switched to a three fingered chord rhythm but kept elements of the descending bass. The little tune on the outro could be sung but if you have a second guitarist could also be played.
