Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. When I first saw the enormous chair Rachel Gardner and Carlos Canul constructed for A Gift from the Bower, an outdoor, multi-disciplinary group exhibition conceived by renowned artists James Surls and Charmaine Locke, I had a vision of a cellist seated in a chair on the chair, performing solo in a bower deep in the woods of Splendora Gardens. I shared this image with Rachel, who didn’t think I was nuts, and over the course of several weeks, composed a piece for unaccompanied cello to be performed at the opening of the exhibit. I was honored when cellist Patrick Moore agreed to premiere the work; his formidable technique and the deep expression he brings to his playing inspired me to embrace the challenge of composing a solo for his instrument.Knowing my piece would be performed outdoors, I was inspired to evoke the rhythm of sound events one hears in woods, especially the rise and fall of wind as it moves through branches and leaves. The very opening of the piece and later, what I hear as an extended coda, were created as moments for the cellist as much as for the listener and are performed in a sort of meditative state, calling to mind the age-old question, “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?� The repeating measures of 16th notes in the piece’s demanding middle section pay tribute to two of my heroes, Terry Riley and Philip Glass. While composing the work, Bach’s Six Suites for Violoncello Solo was another important point of reference, as was double bassist Eberhard Weber's 1973 album, The Colours of Chloë.Once finished, it made sense to name the piece A Gift from the Bower since the opportunity to compose the work was a gift, and in exchange, so is the music I have composed.A Gift from the Bower premiered on April 22, 2023, by Patrick Moore at the Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature.A revised version of this piece was completed on September 5, 2023.

It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr and was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a small village in present-day Austria. A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. So my arrangement is a tribute to Bud, Chesney and Winston!My version features a left hand stride piano/ragtime style and goes through the keys of C and F major. There are lots of stride idioms and riffs in the right hand from the likes of Scott Joplin, Fats Waller and early jazz styles as well as popular pianists such as Russ Conway and Winnifred Attwell. If you have problems with the 10ths in the bass just play octaves or single bass notes instead or possibly 'rolling' or 'bouncing' them ie playing one note and jumping as quickly as possible to the next so as to play almost simultaneously.I don't notate dynamics, fingering or pedalling and prefer to leave these to the discretion of the individual pianist as no two teachers ever agree on such matters.Hope you have as much fun playing it as I did arranging it.

After some time, I decided to see if this would work well on woodwinds and lo and behold, it sits really nicely on bassoon.The first movement is called Canon. It consists of a simple theme that is presented in imitation by each of the four 'voices' first at 2 bar intervals then, in inversion at four bar intervals and then in the original form at one bar intervals. There is a linking fanfare-like passage before the final statement of the original motif with fanfare-like adaptations.The second movement is called Lullaby. The elegant, drifting melody is passed around the four players with a largely chordal accompaniment pattern that needs to be played sotto voce at all times. The tempo is marked Largo, but it is still one-in-a-bar.The third movement is called Hullabaloo-haloo-haloo. While it is based on a 6/8 cantering rhythm, there is a lot of variation in both the accompaniment and the melody. Again, all the lines have a lot of interest, nobody has to play simple um-chucks, and there's even a solo for the Contra  at the end.This is a really enjoyable and exciting new addition to the Bassoon quartet repertoire.

I was the Bugler for our local Boy Scout troop, playing Taps at many campouts and events to signal the end of the day. I also played it with our High School Marching Band for Memorial Day services, including an incredibly special one at my grandfather's gravesite shortly after his passing. He had served in the Army during World War II. I also played it for several funerals, including my Uncle's, who had served in the Marines. For some time, I had volunteered for our local VFW to play for Veteran's funerals. My High School Trumpet teacher and numerous other people in my life are Veterans and have made a huge impact on me. I decided to write this arrangement to give tribute to those and all Veterans and Service Members. It is also a way of helping the Echo Taps Worldwide cause. Echo Taps Worldwide was first done on May 19, 2007, in recognition of Armed Forces Day at National Cemeteries, State Veterans Cemeteries and American Battle Monuments Cemeteries overseas. The idea is that at gatherings across the world on Armed Forces Day, Buglers play Taps in succession, with one beginning as the previous ends, to honor those who have sacrificed so much. I was fortunate to play as a part of this during Armed Forces Day celebrations in Ashtabula for several years. The intention is also to bring attention to the dire need for buglers to play for Veteran's funerals across the world. Various other works of the time imitate this Turkish style, including Mozart's own opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail.
