Overture in Miniature to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite.  Program for a recital, church meditation, school plays, and Christmas presentations of all kinds.  Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky is probably the most popular of the great composers in America. His music certainly appeals to musicians. Likewise, it appeals even to folks who don’t normally listen to serious music. This is probably because of his most noteworthy melodies. Above all, he writes with great emotion. This certainly makes a most noteworthy if not an unforgettable impact. Education First of all, He attended classes at the Russian Musical Society. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five certainly rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials. Western Techniques More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature. Influences Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. Richard Wagner influenced his symphonic writing. Tchaikovsky’s most famous works include the 1812 Overture, The Nutcracker Suite, and Swan Lake. Also famous are the Violin Concerto in D and the six symphonies. The greatest of the six symphonies may be No. 6, the Pathétique. Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a The Nutcracker Suite is a ballet that was performed for the first time in December 1892 in St. Petersburg. To begin with, the original ballet failed to attract a positive reception. However, the ballet suite became probably one of the most popular of all of Tchaikovsky’s works. The ballet suite became even more famous in the 1960s. It is now performed all over the world, particularly during the Christmas season.

This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Trumpet Quintet. Three Trumpets play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other two Trumpets. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library that are becoming available for the first time. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (30 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, but another version is also available in the key of D Major if you would prefer. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar which are also available. There are quite a few other arrangements in a variety of styles and I'm certain you will find something else which might interest you as well. Please keep checking because I plan to continue to add new arrangements as often as I can. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement of Pachelbel's Canon will be a challenge to some performers but will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

This setting is for solo piano, but it is also available for SAB choir, SATB choir, and solo voice. It is not difficult and should be accessible for any pianist of modest ability, especially those serviceable church musicians who may be technically challenged. If you are looking for something for Thanksgiving that is widely known and cherished, this may be it.

Some of the turn-around chords which were chromatic I have altered to be diatonic chords for ease of the player given that it is for an intermediate-level group.The Violin 1 part has the main melody, and pizzicato at the beginning and end. The Violin 2 part as normal supports Violin 1 with harmony which is most of the time in thirds just like the original.The Violin 3 part is the easiest of all the parts mostly playing dotted half notes on the G string as well as playing a little pizzicato.The Cello part has a lot of the color for the chords and the B section has a little counter melody.The Bass part uses, pizzicato and arco, low F naturals and one Eb, as well as dotted quarter notes for the main theme to match the violins.It can also be played as a string quintet if desired. Langey, a cellist, was a German immigrant to America who wrote method books for most of the major instruments. Many young instrumentalists used these books for their first studies including Mr. Sauer who in the foreword of the book describes how the Langey Method was one of his mainstays during his early musical years. I started using this method book at age 14 with my teacher Robert Harper (bass trombonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1943 to 1981) and still refer to it today. The rudiments of music are clearly explained, and the scale and arpeggio exercises are excellent for avoiding the boredom that can sometimes set in with other methods. The short etudes starting on page 42 were some of Mr. Harper’s favorites. With these interesting little pieces, I learned how to play exactly what is on the page. Mr. Harper would stop me multiple times (even within the same measure!) to point out the little things that I had ignored or didn’t play correctly. Without this ability to play what is written, it is impossible to build a musical interpretation later on. In addition to Langey’s own etudes, a selection of etudes by other composers (Vaubaron, Belgke, Dieppo, Manna, Clodomir) plus some solo pieces, round out this wonderful old book. If I were limited to one etude book on the proverbial desert island, this would be it. Ralph Sauer This book of over 120 pages is suitable for performers from beginner right up to advanced. He was very interested in finding and helping develop America's musical voice, leading him to write the 'New World Symphony' (his 9th symphony) during his time here. One note about this arrangement...I know it's next to impossible to play both the melody and the chords in some parts of this arrangement. I wanted to keep the arrangement as it appears in the record as close as possible. I have a fond memory of this song and am sorry you can't experience this version anymore. I was working in a department store electronics dept the year Quadrophonic music came out. Quad was the precursor to Surround Sound. To stand in the middle of 4 speakers facing you and here the opening riffs of this song bounce from one speaker to the next is an experience that is hard to describe. There is a youTube video that has the Quad version posted. But it just isn't the same.
