The second violin often carries the vocal melody, but exchanges it with the first violin and viola occasionally.  There is always a pulse - a moving line to keep a steady beat.  The depth of the bass line for cello is perfect for this piece.  The rhythm is challenging, but the music doesn't carry the players into very high positions, so the song is playable and readable for gigs.
