Love is and was my Lord and King is a delightful miniature in neo-baroque style. It is relatively straightforward as long as the singers can keep up with the modulations. Crossing the bar is quiet and meditative, again relatively straightforward although it requires (ideally) basses able to sing down to a low D-flat. Of old sat Freedom on the heights is by far the most demanding of the three but also the most exhilarating if performed well, with a piano part that is cheerfully out of sync with the choir for much of the time.

It is intended for 10 players: 7 soprano clarinets, Alto, Bass and Contralto. The Bass and Contra are in unison. This creates a very nice swing-style walking bass. If you do not have a contra, you could double the bass part in place of it.This piece maintains the tight and warm harmonies that made the original so famous. While originally a sextet featuring one on a part (Marimba, Vibraphone, 3 Toms, Clay Pots, Tambourine, & Timpani) the mallets, toms, and clay pots parts lend themselves well to part doubling and experimentation with different types of sounds (ex. temple blocks instead of clay pots). Fictilia can be performed with our without a conductor, and is a great piece for practicing chamber communication, careful listening, and individual part work. Though not necessary, printing the score larger and having the players attach it to poster board makes this piece an ideal introduction to scores and part ownership. Having rehearsed and performed the piece both with full score and individually printed parts, I highly recommend the full score route if time allows. The pieces are intended for an end-of-term concert or recital but would be useful for any light hearted occasion. The 15-page piano score also includes the saxophone parts. The highest note in the 1st sax part is (written) D6 and that in the 2nd sax part is C6. Five-page parts for the two E flat alto saxophones are provided as well as an optional part for tenor sax, which is exactly the same part as the 2nd saxophone. In the piano parts the improvisation chords are shown only in the 1st alto part purely for the sake of visual tidiness, but they appear in all the saxophone parts. If the participants do not feel confident enough, the improvising sections can be omitted. The surprises can be musical or non-musical, depending on the performance occasion and there’s an improvisation section which can be repeated as often as required.
