This arrangement of Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman? for String Quartet can also be performed with a String Trio, since the 2nd Violin part is optional.  This song was featured in the 1995 film Don Juan DeMarco, starring Johnny Depp.  It’s got a Spanish flair, which can be a lot of fun at wedding parties and receptions. 1st Violin hogs the melody, I’ll admit that.  But the 2nd Violin adds some really nice harmony, and the Viola will stay quite busy! The Cello part is essential with its hearty bass line. One thing that sets my arrangements apart from others is that I fit all of my parts on 2 sheets of music.  This makes it so the songs can fit into a binder, without the need for flipping pages! Another great thing is that I include cue lines on each part, so that every player in the ensemble can see one other person’s music at the same time.  This is so amazingly useful and has saved countless performances in the past.  If someone skips a beat or misses a measure, you can now see where they are and reconnect! This also helps with sight-reading and keeping the group together in general.

A rich arrangement of this perennial favorite, written for the intermediate student.  This arrangement includes 7 of the themes found in the original composition.  Set in A minor, with some repetition of themes and very 'hand-friendly' chords, this is as accessible as it is motivating for intermediate students.  Teen and adult students especially seem to enjoy this one.  If your student has played either or both of my other arrangements for this piece (there is one for beginner and one for late elementary level), they will recognize the eighth note run, as it is identical in each arrangement.  I find this helps the student feel competent and confident, to find a nugget in the new piece that they already know well.  This piece is great for a holiday-season recital, or even for a short piece for a church service.

The English-language lyrics are by Gene Lees.In the biography Antonio Carlos Jobim: An Illuminated Man, Helena Jobim describes how her brother came up with the idea for the song: Tom's many walks from Ipanema to Santos Dumont Airport yielded that ode of beauty... He would head towards the airport, following the water's edge around Guanabara's Bay. The pretext to go there was to buy foreign magazines and newspapers. From Santos Dumont Airport he could observe his passion, the airplane. Yet he still kept some distance from those machines. He was afraid of flying, but he loved their power, splendor, and aerodynamics-man's conquest over machine.In the song, Jobim writes about landing at Galeão in Rio de Janeiro.
