Musical settings of The Psalms of David are a staple in the Compline world, and are indeed the musical nut of Compline. I composed these in modes for a choir of men, with countertenors and text, and thought these settings would be a soothing repast for the trombone world; maybe not for the 1st player. The lack of stems and meter is a way to get away from the rhythmic feel of western music and into the lumpy, arhythmic, text driven zone of chant. There are only 3 basic note lengths: a larger white note is a whole note; a smaller white note is a half note surrogate; and a black note is a quarter note. Be not anxious to get to the new phrase. Taking time for breaths is a good thing. Psalm 130 is a Penitential Psalm, with music in the acerbic style of Igor Stravinsky after the 2nd trombone solo from the Russian Easter of Korsakov.  Mr. Reynolds has written settings for Psalms 4, 91 Qui habitat, 130 De profundis and 103. The Psalms are appropriate for moderately advanced to intermediate level performers.

On her album Nuits there is a cello and piano duo called La Lugubre Gondola. It is a beautiful work that Franz Liszt wrote on the occasion of Wagner's death in 1833 in Venice. The original version was for piano solo. Liszt subsequently made versions for the cello and the violin. I am a frequent visitor to the city of Venice, especially in the summer during the Biennale. I thought the Franz Liszt work would be a fertile seed for a trio of violin, cello and piano. I was inspired to compose the Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano, Op. 4 towards the end of the Snow Pond Composer’s Workshop that I attended in the summer of 2017. I was compelled even further upon learning that the classical saxophone repertoire is limited. This work presented a challenge, as this is the first work I have composed for the saxophone. The first movement resembles a traditional Sonata-Allegro form, with the first theme being inspired by Petrouchka by Igor Stravinsky. All of the themes in this sonata are presented as the movement progresses. The second movement is slow and lyrical, based on quartal harmonies and tonal ambiguity as well as a varying accompanying passage. The third movement is a short, yet frantic interlude based on augmented arpeggios. It was required reading for me as a high school junior and a text that grows more haunting with each added birthday candle. The piece follows “Mr. Jones� on his journey with narrated extracts from Mitford’s essay. The opening chords are constructed from the pitches D-flat, E-flat, A-flat, and another D-flat, following Igor Stravinsky’s final chord in The Rite of Spring (D-E-A-D).
