2 flutes of the Same Kind - Medium - Digital Download SKU: MQ.7.0661-E Composed by Stanley M. Hoffman. Score. 5 pages. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #7.0661-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.7.0661-E). “The first melody is reminiscent of the opening of The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, but my theme always functions as a mantra. The flutes then meditate on that tune. A transition follows that is evocative of the opening of Symphony No. 6 by Jean Sibelius. Another transition leads to a stretto, then again to a transition, and then to yet another stretto. Next comes the first memory theme. The memory theme is borrowed from my composition Fantasypiece (violoncello and bass) and the orchestral version of it, Fantasypiece for Orchestra. A meditation ensues followed by an ornate, baroque-like variation on the memory theme. The piece closes with a final meditation.†-Stanley M. Hoffman.

Concert Band - Digital Download SKU: A0.1022032 Composed by Fredrik Schwenk. 20th Century. Score and parts. 25 pages. Fredrik Schwenk #6303893. Published by Fredrik Schwenk (A0.1022032). This Crime Comedy Overture was written in 2020 for the composition competition of the 9th International Youth Band Meeting of the Wind Youth in the Bund Deutscher Blasmusikverbände (BDB). The difficulty level of the work was conceived in such a way that more demanding, partly soloistic tasks are provided in the first voices in each case, while the other voices are easier to perform. The work contains deliberate allusions to Paul Dukas' symphonic poem The Sorcerer's Apprentice (1897), Igor Stravinsky's Symphony in 3 Movements (1946) and Dimitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 in E minor, op. 93 (1953).

Geometria is a serial composition*.Geometria, Latin for geometry, is an arrangement of sound shapes. Beginning with a parallelogram it moves to a square and then to a triangle. At the apex of the triangle the piece retrogrades back through the previous shapes; a mirror image in sound. The parallelogram is achieved by use of canon, the square by homophony and the triangle by staggered entrances. There are 5 instruments and 5 notes; F, F#, A,C# and Bb. F#,Bb,C# form a major triad, F#,A,C# form a minor triad, A,Bb,C# form trichord 3-3, Bb,C#,F form trichord 3-11 and A,C#,F form trichord 3-12. Therefore, 5 geometric shapes, 5 instruments, 5 notes, 5 plus harmonic possibilities and 5 players. *Serial Music - the use of a sequence of notes in a definite order as a thematic basis for a composition and a source from which the musical material is derived. Serialism was an attempt to escape tonal-centered compositions prior to the twentieth century. It began with Arnold Schoenberg's twelve tone-technique in the early 1900's, though some of his contemporaries such as Anton Webern, Alban Berg, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, Luigi Nono and Milton Babbit were also working to establish serialism as a form of post-tonal thinking. Other composers such as Bela Bartok, Luciano Berio, Benjamin Britten, John Cage, Aaron Copland, Olivier Messiean, Arvo Part, Dmitri Shostakovich and Igor Stravinsky used serialism only for some of their compositions.

Classical,Thriller. Brass Band. 120 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #849018. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1255512). Listen to this piece hereJessica Mitford’s incisive 1963 essay Behind the Formaldehyde Curtain is the inspiration for this piece. Mitford dissects the embalming industry while baring the ironies and inhumanities of its processes. First included in her book The American Way of Death, we follow “Mr. Jones†from death to burial and experience all the tools, techniques, and abuses in-between. It was required reading for me as a high school junior and a text that grows more haunting with each added birthday candle. The piece follows “Mr. Jones†on his journey with narrated extracts from Mitford’s essay. The opening chords are constructed from the pitches D-flat, E-flat, A-flat, and another D-flat, following Igor Stravinsky’s final chord in The Rite of Spring (D-E-A-D). From here the material alternates between chromatically descending, as the corpse nears its final resting place, and ascending, while the embalmers fight to champion death.- Matthew NunesNiceville, July 2020.
