His family moved to Paris, after Metz and part of Lorraine were annexed to Germany in 1871 following the Franco-Prussian War. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, gaining first prizes for solfège, piano, organ, counterpoint and fugue. He won the French Prix de Rome in 1882, with his cantata Edith. His teachers included Antoine François Marmontel, Albert Lavignac, Émile Durand, César Franck (for the organ) and Jules Massenet (for composition).He succeeded César Franck as organist at Sainte-Clotilde Basilica in Paris from 1890 to 1898. He himself was succeeded by another distinguished Franck pupil, Charles Tournemire. Associated for many years with Édouard Colonne's concert series, the Concerts Colonne, from 1903, Pierné became chief conductor of this series in 1910.His most notable early performance was the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird, at the Ballets Russes, Paris, on 25 June 1910. I also simplified some of the accompaniment by adding and subtracting some notes in certain spots. These changes are meant to make the piece easier to perform and memorize. The flutes then meditate on that tune. A transition follows that is evocative of the opening of Symphony No. 6 by Jean Sibelius. Another transition leads to a stretto, then again to a transition, and then to yet another stretto. Next comes the first memory theme. The memory theme is borrowed from my composition Fantasypiece (violoncello and bass) and the orchestral version of it, Fantasypiece for Orchestra. This Crime Comedy Overture was written in 2020 for the composition competition of the 9th International Youth Band Meeting of the Wind Youth in the Bund Deutscher Blasmusikverbände (BDB). The difficulty level of the work was conceived in such a way that more demanding, partly soloistic tasks are provided in the first voices in each case, while the other voices are easier to perform. The work contains deliberate allusions to Paul Dukas' symphonic poem The Sorcerer's Apprentice (1897), Igor Stravinsky's Symphony in 3 Movements (1946) and Dimitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 in E minor, op. 93 (1953).

I was inspired to compose the Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano, Op. 4 towards the end of the Snow Pond Composer’s Workshop that I attended in the summer of 2017. I was compelled even further upon learning that the classical saxophone repertoire is limited. This work presented a challenge, as this is the first work I have composed for the saxophone. The first movement resembles a traditional Sonata-Allegro form, with the first theme being inspired by Petrouchka by Igor Stravinsky. All of the themes in this sonata are presented as the movement progresses. The second movement is slow and lyrical, based on quartal harmonies and tonal ambiguity as well as a varying accompanying passage. The third movement is a short, yet frantic interlude based on augmented arpeggios.
