Another transition leads to a stretto, then again to a transition, and then to yet another stretto. Next comes the first memory theme. The memory theme is borrowed from my composition Fantasypiece (violoncello and bass) and the orchestral version of it, Fantasypiece for Orchestra. I also simplified some of the accompaniment by adding and subtracting some notes in certain spots. These changes are meant to make the piece easier to perform and memorize. I was inspired to compose the Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano, Op. 4 towards the end of the Snow Pond Composer’s Workshop that I attended in the summer of 2017. I was compelled even further upon learning that the classical saxophone repertoire is limited. This work presented a challenge, as this is the first work I have composed for the saxophone. The first movement resembles a traditional Sonata-Allegro form, with the first theme being inspired by Petrouchka by Igor Stravinsky. All of the themes in this sonata are presented as the movement progresses. The second movement is slow and lyrical, based on quartal harmonies and tonal ambiguity as well as a varying accompanying passage. The third movement is a short, yet frantic interlude based on augmented arpeggios. This Crime Comedy Overture was written in 2020 for the composition competition of the 9th International Youth Band Meeting of the Wind Youth in the Bund Deutscher Blasmusikverbände (BDB). The difficulty level of the work was conceived in such a way that more demanding, partly soloistic tasks are provided in the first voices in each case, while the other voices are easier to perform. The work contains deliberate allusions to Paul Dukas' symphonic poem The Sorcerer's Apprentice (1897), Igor Stravinsky's Symphony in 3 Movements (1946) and Dimitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 in E minor, op. 93 (1953).
