'A Family Likeness' was written for The Society of Recorder Players in the UK and was a great success at its premiere in 2008. The music is characteristically that of Gavin Bryars and would be an ideal introduction to his unique sound world of slow moving pure harmonies and melodic ostinati that evoke expansive landscapes. This significant addition to modern recorder repertoire is a fantastic concert piece which is both accessible and musically rewarding, it can be performed by either six individual players or a larger group with multiple players per part.

The Wiener Philharmoniker Fanfare, Op. AV 109, also known as the Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare is a work for brass instruments written by Richard Strauss.

The Fanfare was written for the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra, was premiered on March 4, 1924 at a benefit ball to mark their 40th anniversary and to raise money for the orchestra's pension fund. (Wikipedia)

Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika was written as a prayer for the freedom and prosperity Africa during a time when most of the continent was dominated by European colonial powers. It later became the anthem of several African countries, and during the presidency of Nelson Mandela, it was folded into the South African national anthem. The song had been banned during the apartheid years because of its association with the ANC. It was the South African counterpart to the role played by We Shall Overcome in the Civil Rights struggle in the U.S. These gentle. reflective variations for organ are appropriate at any time of year, but especially during Black History Month. I wrote this piece to honor the African immigrant families in the church I serve as music director.
