A contemporary of William Shakespeare and John Milton, God-child to poet John Donne, Herbert is associated with the 17th-century Metaphysical poets and “is remembered as a pivotal figure: enormously popular, deeply and broadly influential, and arguably the most skillful and important British devotional lyricist of his or any other time.” Shortly before his death in 1633 at age 39, Herbert directed that a manuscript of his religious poems be sent to his fellow clergyman and friend, Nicholas Ferrar, reportedly saying, “Tell him ... if he can think it may turn to the advantage of any dejected poor Soul, let it be made publick: if not, let him burn it: for I and it, are less than the least of God’s mercies.” First published in 1633, The Temple was an enormously popular work, totaling more than 20,000 copies printed in 13 editions between 1633 and 1679.“Let All the World in Ev'ry Corner Sing” is the refrain of Herbert’s poem, “Antiphon (I),” which appeared in the “Christian Life” section of The Temple. An antiphon may be defined as a short sentence or refrain sung or recited before or after a psalm or canticle; and in Herbert's short poem of two stanzas, he may also have intended that the verses be recited antiphonally (alternately) by two groups. He loves music and he says this is such a nice way to pray. This can be an upbeat gathering song, or it can be slowed down for offertory or just a prayer song. This version is for a strings trio and piano. On this version, you can play it in different ways. As written, I have a trio with refrain and 3 verses. I then have a final refrain that has an echo part and a little different ending. You could do this as a quartet by a third person playing on the echo part earlier in the refrain. I will leave that open for you to decide how you want to do it. As he crossed the Mississippi River, he was inspired to write The Negro Speaks of Rivers, which begins “I’ve known rivers….,� and is the text for the first movement, “My Soul Has Grown Deep.� It reflects upon rivers of historic and geographical importance—the Euphrates, Congo, Nile, and Mississippi. As the rivers have endured over time, so has the human soul. The waters—the blood—runs deep.In contrast to the universal message of the first song, “Troubled Water,� which uses the poetry of the same title, is contemporary and personal. Water becomes an image of the unsettled and uncertain nature of love. The journey of love is a journey of troubled water. There is no resolution.Undaunted by the elusive nature of love, the poet, heard via the chorus, turns flippant, displaying a persevering and humorous outlook in “Jump Right In!� (to the river) from Hughes’ poem Life is Fine.
