Arranged standard brass quintet Mozart's textual inspiration is apparent in the Tuba mirum (Hark, the trumpet) movement, which is introduced with a sequence of three notes in arpeggio, played in B♭ major by a solo tenor trombone, unaccompanied, in accordance with the usual German translation of the Latin tuba, Posaune (trombone). Two measures later, the bass soloist enters, imitating the same theme. At m. 7, there is a fermata, the only point in all the work at which a solo cadence occurs. The final quarter notes of the bass soloist herald the arrival of the tenor, followed by the alto and soprano in dramatic fashion. On the text Cum vix justus sit securus (When only barely may the just one be secure), there is a switch to a homophonic segment sung by the quartet at the same time, articulating, without accompaniment, the cum and vix on the strong (1st and 3rd), then on the weak (2nd and 4th) beats, with the violins and continuo responding each time; this interruption (which one may interpret as the interruption preceding the Last Judgment) is heard sotto voce, forte and then piano to bring the movement finally into a crescendo into a perfect cadence. My arrangement gives the trombone part to the horn, and the vocal entries are given to the trombone, horn and two trumpets. . Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz� (sequentia or sequence). Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. Icarus’s fall was not into a legacy of disdain and oblivion, but in truth, he had come to the end of his triumph. This piece was the first of a series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known. I’ll let the listener find their own connections.About the Composer:Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

This string quartet arrangement is based on the Holst version and combines the composer's beautifully simple harmony with the arranger's own counter-melodies and intricate part writing. Lovely writing for all instruments. An ideal work for Christmas concert programming.This is a through-composed instrumental arrangement that explores the melody and harmonies of the Holst hymn in 3 differently arranged verses. After a short introduction the first verse uses Holst’s original 4-part harmonisation in its beautiful simplicity, with the first violin playing the melodic line. In verse 2, the viola presents the tune in a lower register while the 'cello plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The violins weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.

The poem was published, under the title A Christmas Carol, in the January 1872 issue of Scribners Monthly and was first collected in book form in Goblin Market, The Prince's Progress and Other Poems (Macmillan, 1875). In 1906, Gustav Holst composed a setting of Rossetti's words (titled Cranham) in The English Hymnal which is sung throughout the world and is the basis of this arrangement. A wonderful tune that works well on the guitar as a solo piece. The arrangement makes extensive use of open strings and I have indicated this wherever it is important.

She married the Marquis de Montgeroult who died as an Austrian prisoner in 1793. Reportedly it was respect for her compositions that allowed her to survive the French Reign of Terror. A set of improvisations on La Marseillaise, performed for the Committee of Public Safety, earned her her freedom after she was imprisoned in the Revolution due to her aristocratic background. After her husband's death, Montgeroult took a position at the new Paris Conservatoire in 1795, the first female professor ever to be appointed there and taught for two years. She is considered to be an important bridge between the Classical and Romantic styles. She died in 1836 in Florence, Italy. Recorded for Grand Piano by Nicolas Horvath.
