I met Rafael in 1994, when I was invited to take the position of guest pianist (I was already an alumnus) in my high school orchestra, where he played the violin. I was seven years his senior, but that didn't stop us from forging a great friendship. He played my music in many other occasions. He grew up and matured, became a loving husband, father, and successful attorney. He was always available, always ready to lend a hand, genuinely concerned for the well-being of other people and for the future of our country. He was always there for me and for all his friends and I have lost count of all the times he offered me his help, without expecting anything in return. In November 2019, at age 39, he was diagnosed with cancer. Despite all our hopes and his great will to live, he passed away on April 18, 2020. He now visits me in my dreams and sometimes, when I realize that I'm dreaming, I give him a big hug. Rest in peace my friend. I'll miss you a lot.

Honoured by royalty, her fame was short-lived as she died of Tuberculosis in 1842 aged only 27. Maneo [pronounced MAH-nee-oh] is a Latin word meaning I remain or I await. The concept behind this piece is the process of waiting for and working toward the fulfillment of goals and dreams that seem far off, which requires both patience and persistence. The first movement, Patience, is painfully slow and full of dense, dissonant chords that avoid resolution. Although the melody wanders through several tonal centers, in many ways it feels as though it has not gone anywhere. However, as the movement progresses to a climax, the incessant tritone dissonance finally begins to dissolve. In the second movement, Persistence, the augmented triad dominates both harmonically and melodically for much of the piece, accompanied by relentless eighth-note motion. The main theme from the first movement appears first as an accompaniment figure, and later in a more prominent melodic role in combination with other motives used throughout the movement. A contrasting, dream-like middle section represents catching a glimpse of reaching the sought-after goal, and this theme returns towards the end in a triumphant finish. The two movements are played consecutively with no pause in between.

The pieces are dedicated to the Albanian clarinetist Ibrahim Gunbardhi, which requires telling a little anecdote: For a few years, the composer lived as a neighbor of the clarinetist in Bremen-Lesum, Germany. Each Thursday, there were clarinet and saxophone lessons for several hours. The sounds awakened the composer and mixed themselves in his dreams. From that to composing a cycle of duos was just a simple step.All titles of the cycle are related to the railroad (but in German): The rails meet on the horizon, Unexpected meeting in the on-board bistro, Trees passing by, Curious cows watch us go by, End station, and many others.Why eleven pieces? Some would prefer a round number such as ten or twelve. However, eleven is the composer's favorite number - among other things because it is a prime number and because he was born on the eleventh (of August).Musically speaking, this cycle of pieces is quite rhythmic, particularly with rhythms related to South America.More trivia? At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso and at CSUN under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, and was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs.
