The idea behind the passacaglia relates to the origin of the word, it is basically a gentle stroll down the street (pasar la calle in Spanish, which was converted into Passacaglia in Italian) 2. Dorina: a descriptive piece in Dorian mode based on a song about a cat, from the aptly named village of Chattevoix, who stalks, but never catches, a little bird. 3. Playtime: also about a cat, the composer's own cat who is playful and rushes around the house but occasionally stopping to pummel the soft furnishings. 4. Early Evening in Camden Town: a more serious and sad piece - in 3-3-2 time. It is an evocation of the poor folk in Camden and their dreams of what could be, if only….. It was originally a song, which the composer wrote when he was living in London, based on a poem by fellow Londoner Sandra Erös The streets are part of a toy town, waiting to be played with…. 5. The Bishop's Dance: a curious and comical piece in 11 time (3, 3, 3, 2). It comes from the legend of Robin Hood, in which Robin meets the bishop of Hereford, who had hoped to get the better of him, but Robin prevails and forces him to dance. The clumsy attempts of the ungainly Bishop to obey Robin's commands cause great merriment among the merry men To quote our vicar, Rev Barbara, after the recital For me music paints a picture, and, for that, I have got this picture of someone going for a stroll in their village and then they came across a very old cat wandering down the street imaging it could catch birds but never catching them. And then it would lie down for a sleep and dream of the days when it was a kitten.... It was a very reflective programme and turns our mind about What for the Autumn, what do we need to do next.. it really did fit in with the mood of the year, as we turn towards building up the programme for next year... So thank you, it gave us time to reflect in a very beautiful manner.... I asked Mercedes to listen to and name an early piano composition I wrote. Her reply was “Beyond Her Only Dreaming.” The original composition was ultimately scrapped, but the name stuck with me. It inspired the muses whispering in my haunted ear. I wrote five musical tone poems that were loosely based on a woman’s dream. During the creative process, I asked Mercedes to listen to the tones and use her imagination to create sketches for each section. Her spoken poetry powerfully frames a woman’s dreams, fears, desires, and hope for love. They blend seamlessly with the music and are so masterfully written that they create a picture frame to use as structure but leave the canvas blank. This allows the listener to also take part in this collaboration and paint their own visions of how they experience the music. J.F.B.Her Words   I’m a dreamer and writer of words, but I love music. When John asked me to name his original musical piece, I was delighted. I had recently written a story based on Robert Chamber’s famed The King in Yellow collection and, due to the sound and feel of John’s piece, loosely named the composition after my short story. The arrangements are of moderate difficulty and the aims of this publication are to familiarise, entertain and educate guitarists (and other musicians) with a melodic repertoire of lasting aesthetic value, under the light of contrapuntal treatment. The thirty five volumes of this collection can certainly be printed on paper if so desired and there are a few pages in each volume, either blank or with photographs of various musicians, which can be inserted at will in any place for the correct ordering of left and right hand pages so that page turns can be avoided. The principle of avoiding page turns has been maintained in all volumes, but this edition is also designed with mobile electronic devices in mind such as tablets etc, using the environment and facilities of a score reading application, towards a paperless world, at least in music. Therefore the size of the staves is bigger than usual for ease of reading on a small screen but not big enough to exceed the limit of a two-page view. Premiered June 6th, 2023 by the Killarney Senior Wind Ensemble and Alumni directed by Meagan Lawson, 'Killarney Carnivale' is a programmatic piece describing a small town carnival in rural Manitoba in the early 1930's, spotlighting the family of the town dentist, Dr. Martin McLaren, his wife Irene, and their six girls. 'Killarney Carnivale' describes a fictitious event, but the family is that of the composer, John Hudson. His mother, (second in a family of six girls), as a young teen in Killarney Manitoba, loved playing piano and aspired to be a concert pianist playing her favourite composers in concert halls. Her dreams took a different turn when the family had to move west for Dr. McLaren's health, but she carried with her the melodies she composed and later played to her own children.Picture John Hudson listening to hours of his mother playing piano as a young boy in the early 1950's, immersed in his mother's beautiful music. After her passing in 2010, he longed to hear these beautiful, playful melodies again. His sister Jane Keyes had become a professional piano player and happily took up the task of recreating several of their mother's pieces, which John, now a retired band director, began to transcribe. Inspired by a photograph of the family that very much looked like a carnival booth style photograph, 'Killarney Carnivale' came to life. It opens as the youngest, probably under age two at the time, wakes up. The scene swiftly changes to arrival at the much - anticipated carnival, with all of its magical sights, sounds and heavenly smells of popcorn and treats. First is the carousel, with wooden horses flying about in endless circles with children regaling with laughter.The next is a sideshow tent featuring the exotic dancer Salome, who wiled King Herod, (and probably more than a few in the audience) as her thin, tantalizing veils hinted at her charms.The next tent is dim and displays the wierd and mysterious curiosities from around the world like bearded ladies, dwarfs and the like.The cakewalk is next, with children vying to be the last person sitting as chairs are removed and the music abruptly stops each time. (This section could host a real cakewalk with a few chairs and willing audience participation. Three chairs is suggested.)Finally, the exhausted family drives home in their antique (to us) automobile with the childrens' hair flying in the breeze.One by one, the excited children fall prey to dreamland, and at long last, the exhausted parents flop into bed too.Honouring his mother's short pieces has been a life long dream of Mr. Hudson, and to hear them played by the Killarney Wind Ensemble and Alumni Band was a poignant moment: the return of these melodies to the little town where they first came to life. Many, many thanks to Meagan Lawson, their director, and all of the members of the Killarney band who so very willingly took up the challenge of playing 'Killarney Carnivale'. Their hard work and dedication to this piece is deeply, deeply appreciated.

One of the most loved Christmas tunes made famous by the ultimate crooner, Bing Crosby, I'll Be Home For Christmas resonates with me every year as I have been living in the UK since 2012. It speaks of the desire to return home for the special time of year to share in the celebration with family and friends. But in a small twist, the last line of the song is if only in my dreams, leaving us to consider those around the world who are displaced from their loved ones.This arrangement is in a simple ballad style and features the melody in the soprano and tenor voices. The harmony is chromatic in parts, but with good voice leading to assist with the learning of this jazz-infused tune. The bass part mainly anchors down the harmony, with a dm consonant aiming to recreate a jazz double bass sound. Soft consonants and sweet do sounds will ensure a smooth ballad style. Ranges are within a standard choir set, so this should be performable by most community choirs with basic reading ability. Beautifully laid out in A4 size, the score and parts are easy to read and available NOW for digital download. Published by Blaze Scheuerman (A0.1047338). The Doomsday Clock is a piece that primarily shows anxiety and being overwhelmed. I composed this piece my senior year of high school. At the time I could feel the impending deadline of college piano auditions approaching, and this coupled with a hand injury caused me to be very stressed out and feel that I was unable to put in the time needed to practice and prepare. I chose the name “Doomsday Clock� as I felt that the event that was slowly creeping closer was actually going to be the destruction of my dreams. The intro starts up bleak as the main character feels lost and afraid. The baseline hints at something to come that keeps inching closer and closer. Then at measure 8 it hits him, the thing to come is inevitable and can’t be stopped. He tries to reason with it, but it does not budge. This forces him to go into a mad scuffle in order to keep up and be ahead, as seen in measure 13. What then proceeds is a series of highs and lows, such as in measure 24 where the main character is terrified of what is to come and in measure 33 where he begins to believe he can do it. The piece then modulates to C major, where the main character feels that he is ahead and going to be successful. But every time he states a confident line, it seems to deteriorate or break down. Eventually he leads back into the mad scuffle and reaches his lowest point in measure 74. Here he feels lost and is about to give up when something encourages him to keep on going. It manifests a childlike voice reminding him of why he started this journey in the first place, and it convinces him to not give up and instead keep on going (seen in the Eb major section in the style of the intro). He eventually reaches the end and makes it, almost collapsing at the finish.

Ode to Jane is an intermediate level classical guitar solo, composed by Bradley Powell, in honor of Dame Jane Goodall's 90th birthday celebration (4/3/24). Dr. Jane Goodall is a world-famous primatologist and anthropologist, considered the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees. She has changed the world with her studies, and continues to do so with environmental and educational activism.  Brad Powell met Dr. Goodall in the early 1990s, and has composed this piece in her honor.  It is a relaxing waltz style, using intermediate-level classical guitar technique, with both folk and modern jazz guitar chord voicings. This is in STANDARD NOTATION WITH TAB.  (A version in standard notation without TAB is also available separately.)ABOUT the composer: Brad Powell (aka The Candlelight Guitarist) began guitar at age ten, inspired by The Beatles. At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso, and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs. English lyrics were later written by Gene Lees. The Portuguese title refers to the Corcovado mountain in Rio de Janeiro.Tony Bennett recorded the first popular English cover of Quiet Nights with new lyrics by Buddy Kaye in 1963.   Numerous English cover recordings then followed sometimes credited to Lees and/or Kaye and Lees, including the Andy Williams recording of the song with English lyrics, reaching #92 in the Billboard Hot 100 and #18 in the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart in 1965.  Also receiving air-play, contemporaneously with Andy Williams' recording of Quiet Nights, was Kitty Kallen's version.
