I again returned to Chopín for inspiration in this piece as the left hand opening is quite reminiscent of his Prelude Op. 28, No. 3 (though not nearly as fast). In fact, the first measure is identical to Chopín’s and they’re both in the same key. However, it immediately becomes apparent that this prelude is more inspired by George Winston than Chopín. My goal was to capture the sheer joy of the melody and the lyrics. In dulci jubilo translates as in sweet rejoicing and that’s what I wanted to bring to my arrangement. There is a somewhat extended opening section before getting to the actual melody found within a constant stream of sixteenth notes in the right hand: A challenge for the pianist to bring out the line amongst all those notes. There is also a secondary melody to be found in the left hand hidden among its own torrent of notes. There is an almost chorale-like closing for several bars before a final flourish brings the prelude to a joyous close.

Johann Sebastian Bach set this melody several times: as a chorale in BWV 368; and then for organ in BWV 608 as a double canon in his Orgelbüchlein and in BWV 729 as a chorale prelude. Clearly he was fond of the tune and who can blame him. This arrangement of BWW 368 follows almost exactly the four original voices from the chorale. The score is also available.

Both are beautiful, but this is more in the spirit of Come Hear the Bells.  The bassoon has a cantus firmus at mm 29, and is otherwise featured.This is the fourth of five Christmas carols for woodwind quintet, in various styles. They share the themes of coming together and heeding the call of bells to celebrate the holidays.They would work separately running between 2 and 3 minutes or all together for about 13 minutes. So they would give your winds a chance to shine in contrast to your full ensemble. Lisa Albrecht’s beautiful arrangement for Trombone quartet is based on the 1837 setting by Robert Pearsall, the one of the favored by many choirs and their organists. The melody was so popular that many composers have tried their hand at arranging it including Buxtehude, Bach, Liszt and Dello Joio. This arrangement of about 3 minutes can be performed by intermediate to advanced players. Trombone I is in tenor clef and the rest of the parts are in bass clef and can be performed by intermediate level players.
