I grew up next to a stream running through my parents’ property, so I was always playing with the mud, fish, and tadpoles. When the professional EvNiKa Clarinet, Violin, and Piano Trio asked for original music, this water idea began to form in my head. The Stream, inspired by Virgil Thomson’s piece The River (1937), stylistically models various American speech rhythms and folk melodies to personify a small but growing body of water. Written by Sting, the single was the biggest US and UK hit of 1983. Sting wrote the song in 1982 - I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn't realise at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control. This famous song by the Police had its original guitar part played on a palm muted electric guitar but it works really well fingerpicked on an acoustic. There is a full explanation of the song's history and notes on how to play it included with the score, also separate parts for voice and guitar.

They were walking slow, walking fast, talking slow, talking fast or not at all. I never had a chance to listen to Jazz, Blues and Boogie music. I had no idea of how the Boogie song works. However, when I moved to the States, I had more chances to experience these types of music.  I like the swing rhythm. It makes people want to dance. It makes people want to swing their body with the music. On one Sunday morning, I had the melody of this song in my head. Therefore, I decided to write down what I heard. When playing this song, a special skill is needed. Please do not use the skill of turning fingers. The turning fingers over and under is often used when playing scales. Like turning 1 under 3 or turning 3 over 1, etc. The turning finger skill is going to slow down the flow of this song. What you can do is to move the whole hand to the next position instead. Also this skill will help you when playing the ornament notes (appoggiatura notes) smoothly. This PDF is designed to for two sided printing. It is going to look like a sheet music book. This is the reason why there is one blank page in some of the songs. You can also just print the sheet music pages only.

The text was inspired by the 2020 pandemic situation. Choirs around the world were unable to sing together as they were accustomed due to social distancing needs as a way to slow the viral spread. The text is essentially a directive for everyone to find a way to sing in whatever way you can.

This piece can be used for various religious and non-religious occasions and has the goal to inspire the performer to makes his/her own interpretation.

I immediately heard music by Franz Liszt in my head and visualised the two protagonists in the novel sitting on a terrace drinking coffee, chatting and dreaming, witty and endearing – which is also a perfect description of this small piano composition for four hands.
