It is associated with the tradition of children in Provence dressing as shepherds and milkmaids, carrying torches and candles to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve while singing the carol. The Carol tells the story of two milkmaids, Jeannette and Isabella, who discover the baby Jesus in a stable and run to inform the villagers, urging them to come quietly not to disturb the sleeping child. The song's melody is believed to have originated as a lively dance tune from as early as the 14th century, and French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier later adapted it for a drinking song. The lyrics were first associated with this melody in a collection of French carols in 1901, transcribed by Julien Tiersot. Edward Cuthbert Nunn made the most popular English adaptation in the late 19th century. Despite its historical roots and charming melody, Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella is considered one of the lesser-known carols outside of France. This ninth impromptu (2 min. 45 sec.) in the series of pieces inspired by sounds of childhood, namely early 90s video game music, is a workout for the left hand.  The right hand plays a continuous ostinato high above the rest of the arrangement.  Care must be taken with the ostinato so that it emphasizes the dotted quarter note pulse and not the quarter note pulse.  This can be difficult because of the note grouping of two instead of three eight-notes.The left-hand has the herculian task of juggling both the chordal accompaniment and primary melody.  At all times the melody found in the middle stave must sound out above all other parts. Fanfarra Ciclópica is inserted in the cycle Imaginary Beings, being the 5th composition of this cycle. It is based on the story of Ulysses and his men when confronted with the Cyclops Polyphemus. It was written for the 1st Academy of Metals of the Symphonic Orchestra of Porto Casa da Música, and was premiered in 2013 by the septet of metals of the Symphony Orchestra based at the institution. This work was nominated by the Portuguese Society of Authors for the Prize of best author of 2013, in the category of Erudite Music. The piece has a text for optional narrator.
