PULSO DE LA VIDA was composed as part of my dear friend Kostas Tosidis' doctoral thesis with the title Bowing technique on the guitar.The character of the piece changes from simple and meditative to rhythmic and tension-filled, reflecting different stages of our lives.Using a C, G, D tuning for the bass strings, the guitar utilizes resonance to create sustained, cello-sounding melodies on the fourth string, complemented by harmonies on the fifth and sixth strings.The bowing technique is introduced with a continuous tremolo accompanied by an extended form of the first theme. The more dancelike and rhythmical part of the piece uses a 19/16 measure that allows us to experience a sense of disparity. Finally, the simplicity combined with a sense of completeness, but also of abandonment of the beautiful gift of life, leaves us in a state of stillness for any kind of introspection.PULSO DE LA VIDA a été composé dans le cadre de la recherche doctorale de mon cher ami Kostas Tosidis, sous le titre Bowing technique on the guitar (technique d'archet à la guitare).Le caractère de la pièce passe de simple et méditatif à rythmique et plein de tension, reflétant les différentes étapes de notre vie.La guitare, dont les cordes basses sont accordées en do, sol et ré, utilise la résonance pour créer des mélodies soutenues au son du violoncelle sur la quatrième corde, complétées par des harmonies sur les cinquième et sixième cordes.La technique d'archet est introduite par un trémolo continu accompagné d'une forme étendue du premier thème. La partie plus dansante et rythmique de la pièce utilise une mesure 19/16 qui nous permet d'éprouver un sentiment de disparité. Enfin, la simplicité combinée à un sentiment de plénitude, mais aussi d'abandon du magnifique cadeau qu'est la vie, nous laisse dans un état de tranquillité propice à toute forme d'introspection.

Composer’s Notes  Anim Zemiros was composed in 1985 while I was a doctoral student of Martin Boykan at Brandeis University. The initial fugal theme was inspired by the melody from the third movement of Beethoven's Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132, also known as Heiliger Dankgesang. My theme resembles Beethoven's melody in two ways: it aurally approximates the rhythms of his theme and it also takes the contour of Beethoven's melody and inverts it, also in an approximated way. This is where the similarities to Beethoven's theme end, forAnim Zemiros is most certainly not composed in the Lydian mode! Rather, it is composed in a chromatically saturated musical language. Although Anim Zemiros may be used for the Jewish Musaf Sabbath Service, it was conceived as a concert piece. In the synagogue, this hymn is sung responsively by the cantor and congregation. The responsive nature of this hymn is what inspired the use of contrapuntal passages alternating with homophonic ones. Anim Zemiros begins with a statement of the initial fugal theme in the basses followed by a response at the interval of a fifth in the altos during which the basses present the counter theme. After a brief episode, the same thing happens in the tenor and soprano voices while the basses and altos present new contrapuntal melodies. A brief, contrasting, calm homophonic chorale passage ensues (a textural foreshadowing of both the loud climax and the hushed closing of the piece). This is followed by an extended development section (like ones from sonata-allegro movements) in which ideas from both the contrapuntal and homophonic sections are fragmented and stratified. Shifting time signatures provide added momentum to this music that leads to the homophonic climax that follows. Next comes an “anti-fugue” in which the initial fugal theme is presented backwards, as is the fugal form itself, moving from four voices, to three and finally to two. However, rather than moving to one voice as at the opening of the piece (which would have been a very predictable thing to do), the piece ends with a reminiscence of the calm homophonic chorale. Ashkenazic pronunciation was chosen over Sephardic for two reasons. I wished to have the s sound on the Hebrew letter sov rather than the t sound. In addition, Ashkenazic pronunciation is considered to be somewhat archaic since Sephardic is used in modern Hebrew. I felt this gave me artistic license to compose vocal lines containing correct or incorrect syllabic stress for purely musical effect. Es parte de una inscripción griega escrita en una columna de mármol puesta sobre la tumba que había hecho construir Sícilo para su esposa Euterpe, cerca de Trales (en Asia Menor), actual ciudad de Aydın, a unos 30 km de la ciudad costera de Éfeso (en Turquía) y datada en el siglo I aproximadamente. El autor es anónimo. El tema de El Epitafio de Seikilos (en griego Ἐπιτάφιος τοῦ Σεικίλου), es inscripción funeraria grabada hacia el siglo I en una columna de mármol. Bonita inscripción puesta sobre la tumba que había hecho construir un tal Sícilo (o Seikilos) para su esposa Euterpe en la actual ciudad de Aydın (en Turquía). Actualmente se encuentra en un museo en Dinamarca. La inscripción y su particular descripción de su musicalidad están precedidas por el siguiente texto:Soy una imagen de piedra. Seikilos me pone aquí, donde soy por siempre, señal de eterno recuerdo. El epitafio consta de este texto, sobre el que se anota la melodía cuya línea intermedia recoge la pronunciación aproximada en griego koiné: Brilla, mientras estás vivo, no estás triste, porque la vida es por cierto corta, y el tiempo exige su derecho.La melodía, escrita en Harmonia o Tonoi Griego frigio en la adaptación escrita, e hipofrigio en género diatónico, se desenvuelve en un ámbito de octava justa. La canción es melancólica, clasificada como skolion o 'canción para beber'. Se desconoce la velocidad (tempo) de la canción, ya que no está explicada en la notación. El ethos de la composición es equilibrado y está definido por la especie de octava (Harmonía o Tonoi) escogido (Frigio). No se pretende, aparentemente, expresar sentimientos de tristeza ni alegría. La composición está construida y organizada según principios modales. Está en modo mixolidio actual. Dabei kann das Arrangement optional zum Üben oder auch zur Performance mit dem Klavier mit Hilfe der Akkorde über der Solostimme begleitet werden.Die Noten sind auf Effizienz getrimmt - Verse 1 und Verse 2 stehen übereinander, aber werden natürlich nacheinander gesungen. Die Solostimme kann dabei auch auf zwei Personen aufgeteilt werden (z.B. auf die Strophen und den Post-Chorus). FROM THE PREFACEThe fourth volume of Renaissance music for classical guitar contains twenty mostly well-known and a few more rare intermediate Renaissance pieces taken mainly from lute and vihuela sources. I have tried to keep the upper level of technical difficulty to the contemporary grade VI level of the A.B.R.S.M. which takes the student to the advanced level (grades VII-VIII).The pieces are given in two versions, first as decorated pages in ordinary notation, and then the same pieces are again given in undecorated pages of notation and tablature. Therefore each volume contains two books in one and the choice is left to the user whether to keep the volume as presented, or to construct his own book by inclusion or deletion of unwanted pages, blank pages, etc, for use either as a printed or a tablet-screen book version.
