Composed by Charles Colin. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 20 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3227001. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534181).

Charles Colin was born in Cherbourg, France on June 2, 1832. He entered the Paris Conservatory and won a First Prize in Oboe in 1852 and then studied composition, winning the Second First Grand Prix de Rome in 1857 (Bizet won the First Grand Prix the same year). In 1868, he became the Professor of Oboe at the Paris Conservatory. His series of eight Solos were written for the exams of his class. He died on July 26, 1881 in Paris.

These works were published by Millereau with the instrumentation “pour hautbois ou saxophone”. The saxophone part was obviously the soprano instrument in C of the “orchestral” family of C-F instruments, which are no longer in use except for the C-Melody Tenor instrument. These versions are published for the more common series of instruments in Bb and Eb. The saxophone part is the same as for the instruments in C, but the piano part is transposed to keep the ranges the same.

Composed by Johann Pachelbel. Arranged by Stephen DeCesare. Baroque,Classical,Film/TV,Holiday,Wedding. Score and parts. 15 pages. Exultet Music #3053335. Published by Exultet Music (A0.619861).

The most popular song to be played as a processional for many weddings around the world.  This arrangement has been specifically modified so that the entire piece can be used for the whole bridal party to walk down the aisle.  The dialogue between the instruments is such where not one instrument will dominate the other and the artists will not get easily winded because of long phrases.  Accessible to play and appropriate for any wedding service.

By Brian Buda. By John Calkin. Arranged by Brian Buda. Christmas,Contest,Festival,Holiday,Sacred,Traditional. Score. 12 pages. Budaful music #645603. Published by budaful music (A0.1040834).

This arrangement of the classic carol 'I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day' (WALTHAM) is a great addition to a holiday themed school program, church service, and Christmas contests and recitals. As with any song, the lyrics are very important, even when performed instrumentally as in this case. The emotions of the poem are imitated in the music. Encourage listeners to follow along by printing/displaying Henry W. Longfellow's well loved text: I heard the bells on Christmas day Their old familiar carols play, And wild and sweet the words repeat Of peace on earth, good will to men. This arrangement functions very well for both a moderately advanced solo soprano sax and sax duet. The duet part is more intermediate, making it a great option for an intermediate level student, or a less experienced player. While the duet part has been written for its corresponding solo instrument, the duet part can be purchased for other instruments as well. Separate duet parts available for: Flute, Oboe, Soprano sax, Clarinet in Bb, Alto Sax, Horn in F, Trumpet in Bb, Trombone, Baritone (T.C.), Violin, Viola, and Cello. Search for this arrangement and its 'supplemental' parts. .

Composed by Johann Pachelbel. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Baroque,Multicultural,Standards,Wedding,World. 36 pages. Regis Bookshar #6260481. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.814505).

Canon (Pachelbel) (Bb) (Saxophone Octet - 1 Sop, 3 Alto, 3 Tenor, 1 Bari) - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Saxophone Octet consisting of 1 Soprano Saxophone, 3 Alto Saxophones, 3 Tenor Saxophones and 1 Baritone Saxophone. The Soprano Saxophone, 1 Alto Saxophone and 1 Tenor Saxophone play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other five instruments. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (36 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, but another version is also available in the key of D Major if you would prefer. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar which are also available. There are quite a few other arrangements in a variety of styles and I'm certain you will find something else which might interest you as well. Please keep checking because I plan to continue to add new arrangements as often as I can. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement of Pachelbel's Canon will be a challenge to some performers but will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments

If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!

The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!

I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.

As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.

·     Choose a tempo.

·     Choose a dynamic.

·     Choose an articulation/style.

One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.

Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.

If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.

The variations are endless!

If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.

All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!

Enjoy!

SKU: A0.588403

Composed by David McKeown. Concert,Latin,Standards,World. Score and parts. 7 pages. David McKeown #5755307. Published by David McKeown (A0.588403).

Joropo de Justina is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Soprano and one Alto Saxophone.

This duet is based on the traditional Latin style of Joropo which is the national and traditional music of Venezuela. The music and its accompanying dance comes from the central plains area and is also found over the border in parts of Colombia. The basic pulse of the Joropo is 3, but this is overlaid with complex cross-rhythms. The main instrument is the harp, along with cuatro and maracas as the only percussion instrument. In the modern era other instruments may join the ensemble, especially bass. This arrangement represents the song style of Joropo, with the vocal alternating with instrumental breaks.

If you play to an advanced intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The many cross rhythms will provide a rhythmic challenge and there is little time to catch breath; following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. Joropo de Justina has a performance time of around two minutes at full tempo. You can listen to a full performance the Clarinet version of this duet by following the YouTube link above.

Composed by Lowell Mason. Arranged by David McKeown. Christmas,Jazz,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Score and parts. 3 pages. David McKeown #6562113. Published by David McKeown (A0.594236).

Joy to the World is a much-loved Christmas carol. This version is arranged as a duet in a Jazz Swing style for one Soprano and one Alto Saxophone. Click on the YouTube link above to listen to a full length performance of this arrangement played on Clarinet.

The lyrics of Joy to the World were composed by Isaac Watts in 1719, while the most popular melody associated with the carol was composed by Lowell Mason in 1843. Mason was an admirer of G.F. Handel and the similarity of the melody to parts of the Messiah have been pointed out by many commentators.

With a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Joy to the World is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The jazz style is a fun, fresh and soulful take on this familiar tune.

Joy to the World is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. There is plenty of articulation detail to help deliver an authentic style. The melody is played two and a half times, with a short chiming intro and outro. This arrangement is suitable for players at an intermediate level.
