Its descriptive style tells a tale of love and loss, adventure and peril, and mystery and drama. A free, mystical opening leads into a delicate main theme in a minor key, accompanied by finger cymbals and chime tree. The opening strains provide a transition into an energetic ride in 12/8 time with rhythmic, malleted bass bells under a strong treble melody and using tambourine for rhythmic support. The bass and middle bells are then given the melody in an antiphonal style, followed by a return to the malleted bass and the upper-treble melody with the addition of a tenor drum. The section closes in great triumph but gives way to randomly malleted bells and a return to the mysterious opening strains.

The first movement is a musical journey through the high-pressure phases of the element sulphur, the second envisages a journey to Saturn's moon Titan, while the third is an expressionistic representation of the structure of the substance CL20, the most explosive substance known to man. The Symphonic Overture (for orchestra) has its roots in Julian Wagstaff's stage musical John Paul Jones, which premiered in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2001 and was revived professionally with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in 2010. Essentially a tragedy of ambition, the musical tells the story of the son of a Scottish gardener who became a hero of the American Revolution as the father of the American navy.The work is in three clearly discernible sections: The first interlaces the Scots jig in 6/8 (which opens the musical) with the anthemic 'Freedom Arise' theme in 4/4 (which closes it), by means of metric modulation. The second, slower section is essentially a canon and variation on the 'Home Again' ballad from Act I of the show, while the third and final section is a radical development of the 'Battle of Flamborough Head' sequence from Act I of the musical.
