The Brandenburg concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 1046–1051) are a collection of six instrumental works presented by Bach to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt, in 1721. They are widely regarded as among the finest musical compositions of the Baroque era. Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F major, BWV 1047 was originally scored for a Concertino of natural trumpet in F, recorder, oboe, violin, with a Ripieno of two violins, viola, violone, and basso continuo (including harpsichord). This challenging arrangement has been adapted for a Saxophone Quintet: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone and Bass. An alternate Baritone part is included that is more saxophone friendly, and a 2nd Baritone part is included as a substitute for the Bass. I composed it under the impression of the organ works of Bach, Buxtehude and Johann Peter Kellner.This work was composed for Reformation Day, so it has the melody of the chorale Ein feste Burg as its pivot.Since harmonies became more colourful after the Baroque period, I have included a lot of chromaticism in this work.This piece is technically extremely demanding, both the manual part and the pedal, which is treated as an absolutely equal voice.The voices are very dense, so that they are not all perceptible at first hearing. The decisive thing in playing is that the result is something like the one in my recording. It is not necessary to play all the voices, or the spacing of the voices in the right hand can be made more tangible by using the respective octaves.I have attached a musical example in which I play the composition on the organ of the Petrikirche in Erfurt (Thuringia).
