Trio for Flute Cello and Piano.
Trio for Flute Cello and Piano is part of my album Modern Chamber Music Vol. 2 by Darian Stavans.
Modern Chamber Music Vol. 2 is a second proposal of academic knowledge and Darian Stavans’ personal view of our modern times. This album compiles works for solo instruments like the piano in Sonatina and Variations and pieces for duets like the clarinet and piano in the six nocturnes written for this instrument combination. The album ends with a trio for flute, cello and piano, a piece with great emotional content and an exquisitely accomplished instrumental dialog. Once again, the conceptual language is academic, but as we listen we can count on the freshness of its musical nature.

I met Deok Yong Kim as a member of the Nico Quartet at the New England Conservatory of Music, in Boston, Massachusetts. I saw her on two occasions performing in Jordan Hall: once as the soloist in a Shostakovich Cello Concerto in Jordan Hall with Hugh Wolff and the NEC Philharmonic and then in an Honors String Quartet concert with Nico in Jordan Hall.  Both concerts were in the spring of 2019, and they were fantastic.  I was so impressed with her and her quartet that I wrote a string quartet for them that summer, NICO.  They recorded it for me @ NEC in the fall and I love the recording.  The next thing I did was to write a violin sonata for Minami Yoshida, the first violinist of Nico.  It is called Mi-la-mi, after her name.  Then I wrote this work for Claire, Kim’s American name.   When I asked her what was the meaning of 803 in her email address, she said that is the street number of her apartment in Korea.  So, that is how the title Trio 803 came about.

Trio 803 (2020) is in five movements.

1. Adagio, Andante moderato

2. Adagio

3. Allegro con moto, TRIO

4. Adagio

5. Vivace, TRIO

Enjoy!

Rhapsody in Blue by Ira Gershwin has been arranged here for trio: piano, flute and cello.   Most of the iconic moments of the piece have been preserved with the total rendition slightly shorter than the original.   The parts are challenging for all instrumental parts with important melodies shifting from one to another part.   The score includes the full director's score as well as the individual parts.

Trio in B-flat Major, D471

Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828)

Saxophone Trio SAB/SAT

Trio in B-flat Major, D471 by Franz Schubert, arranged for Saxophone Trio SAB/SAT.

Like so many of Schubert's instrumental works, Trio in B-flat D471 is an incomplete composition. The string trio consists of a completed first movement marked ‘Allegro’ and only a few bars of a slower second movement. In many ways it looks back to earlier composers such as Haydn and Mozart. This transcription for saxophone trio is of the complete first movement only.

Included in this arrangement:
  • Full trio score (SAT)
  • Soprano Saxophone part
  • Alto Saxophone part
  • Tenor Saxophone part
  • Baritone Saxophone part (tenor saxophone alternate)

There is one instance of altissimo in each of the soprano, alto, and baritone parts. Suggestions are given for alternate notes should that be necessary. The tenor part require no altissimo. Additionally the bari part often goes quite high in its normal range. Trio in B-flat D471 was originally scored for the usual string trio ensemble of violin, viola, and cello. This transcription is for saxophone trio: soprano, alto, and either tenor or baritone saxophones (parts are included for both). It is a straightforward example of Classical sonata-allegro form. This arrangement is in the original key of B-flat major. It is in common time (4/4) throughout. The tempo stays at 'allegro' throughout. Intermediate-advanced players should have no problems with this work.

Composed by Christian Petzold, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Martin Luther. Arranged by Ander. Baroque,Easter,Renaissance,Sacred,Wedding. 38 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #738859. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1138518).

This album contains 5 of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous and versatile pieces for sax trio, all very well suited for the beginners who want to get to know the baroque repertoire. They are also suitable for performances at events such as: weddings, Christian and church ceremonies, Easter, and academic recitals or concerts. They can be used in music institutions and by teachers as repertoire material and study methods, either for performance or instrumental technique. This collection includes a totally free bonus for you to enjoy: Martin Luther's A Mighty Fortress is Our God, a Renaissance sacred song for choir, which has been adapted for this set. 1: Air on the G String - The original piece is part of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 3 for orchestra, in D Major, BWV 1068, written for Prince Leopold of Anhalt. The so-called Air on the G String dates from one of these latter employments. In the service of the Prince of Cöthen, Bach composed not only the famous Brandenburg Concertos, but also several orchestral suites, from the third of which comes the Air on the G String. This curious title derives from a later arrangement of this piece for violin solo, in which the melody is played entirely on the lower, higher string of the instrument. 2: Arioso - The Cantata 156 (BWV 156) was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. Of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast, it was the last and only one scored for solo voice. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part. 3: Jesu, joy of man's desiring - This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works. 4: O Jesulein süss, o Jesulein mild - The Jesulein süß, the Jesulein mild is an original traditional German choral melody for voice and continuous bass arranged by Johann Sebastian Bach around 1735. With lyrics by Valentin Thilo, O Jesulein süss is a sacred melody adapted and catalogued as BWV 493. The first translation is by Dirk van Hogendorp, who made it more of a song for the time of suffering. 5: Minuet in G major - This famous piece has traditionally been attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, as it appears in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena , a notebook that Bach gave to his wife Anna Magdalena in 1725 and which was to be filled with the favorite selections of Bach family members. However, recent research has concluded that this minuet, sometimes referred to as BWV Anhang 114. was probably composed by Christian Petzold, a German composer and organist contemporary with Bach. Bonus: A Mighty Fortress is Our God, by Martin Luther - Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott is a hymn written by Martin Luther probably before 1529. The melody was also considered his work for a long time, but it was created at least with the collaboration of Johann Walter. The song is of great symbolic power for Protestantism, where it is also known as Deus noster refugium et virtus. Considered one of the most important hymns in the history of Christianity, it was considered by the Christian poet Johann Heirich Heine (1797-1856) to be the Marseillaise of the Reformation, in an allusion to the French national anthem.

Composed by Johann Pachelbel. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Instructional,Standards,Wedding. Score and parts. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #6105689. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552065).

Score: 9 pages
Duration: 2:40. The famous Pachelbel Canon arranged for Piano Trio. A great choice for weddings & receptions!

Pachelbel's Canon

Pachelbel's Canon is, in fact, the traditional title for a composition by the German composer Johann Pachelbel. Other names for the work include namely: Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo, Canon and Gigue in D, and of course Canon in D. We do not know when or why in particular it was written. The oldest copy is surprisingly from the 19th century. It is important to realize that it was a common routine for organists to practice improvisation on the chord progression underlying the canon. Pachelbel originally scored the Canon notably for three violins and continuo. He also in fact paired the Canon with a gigue. The movements are homotonal, to clarify, both are in the key of D major.

History

In due time, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style and remained in virtual oblivion for centuries. The Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra, however, recorded an arrangement of it in 1968. As a result, it gained approval. Many ensembles began likewise to record the piece in the 1970s and by the 1980s became ubiquitous as background music. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Also, since the 1980s, it has been not only wildly popular for weddings, but also for funeral ceremonies in the USA and Europe.

Pachelbel Background

Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period.

Works

Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous, particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard.

Influences

Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music.

Legacy

All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works.
