String Quartet String Quartet - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.977358

By Robbie Williams. By Dino Fekaris, Francois de Roubaix, Frederick Perren, Guy Anthony Chambers, and Robert Peter Williams. Arranged by Des McNutty. Pop. Score and parts. 15 pages. Des Press #6445791. Published by Des Press (A0.977358).

Supreme was one of Robbie Williams' hits in year 2000 from the album Sing When You’re Winning on the label Chrysalis Records.

It is possible that it took less time to put this song together than the legal teams needed to negotiate the distribution of royalties because it contains two interpolations, or re-recorded samples from other works. The more familiar of these is the bridge, interpolated from I Will Survive (by Dino Fekaris, Frederick Perren) first sung by Gloria Gaynor. The other is the main string riff, which is interpolated from music to the 1970 French-Italian film Dernier domicile connu (Last Known Address) composed by François de Roubaix. The rap section after the bridge is replaced with an excerpt from this.

Otherwise, this arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonalities as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun.

The level is on the easier side of advanced; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students.

Enjoy!

Composed by Brian Joyce. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and part. 19 pages. Brian Joyce #3009363. Published by Brian Joyce (A0.836706).

A couple of lifetimes ago (or so it seems now) I wrote a quartet of sonatas: one apiece for flute, viola, oboe, and the present work for cello. I thought of them as representing Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter respectively. This one, dating from 1972, expands the concept of a rondo to dimensions covering an entire multi-movement sonata. There are the traditional three movements one would expect to find, but they are tied together through unmetered sections for solo cello set between them. In this way, the true movements almost function as episodes in a giant rondo. Additionally, the solo interpolations form an entity in themselves, each picking up where the previous one left off. And if that weren’t enough, thematic material in the real movements is often first presented in the Interpolations, so it is difficult to tell where an idea really belongs. Given my philosophical leanings at the time (it was the 70s, remember!), this ambiguity was precisely the point.

Performance time is approximately 12 minutes.

Composed by James Domine. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score. 16 pages. Earth Music, Ltd. #2081575. Published by Earth Music, Ltd. (A0.976503).

The piano sonatas by James Domine are cast in one movement and follow the traditional sonata-allegro form. The first of these, Piano Sonata #1 in C major opens with a lively theme in C major sweetened by the interpolation of a recurring f# that is marked with the tempo indication of Animato. The principal theme is followed by a contrastingly sentimental cantabile melody that has something of a jazz-ballad flavor set in the dominant key. These two themes are cunningly entwined through the development in an harmonic sequence that emerges into a playful recapitulation. The sonata ends with an open-spaced quartal figuration that implies the tonic key of C major but without implicitly spelling it out in its common triadic form. The subtitle Commedia dell’arte all’improvviso comes from the light-hearted comedic character of the principal theme that is treated throughout in a quasi-improvisational manner reminiscent of the sixteenth-century Italian theatrical style. This sonata, although begun at an earlier date, was completed in 2005 at the request of Joanna Ezrin, pianist and pedagogue as a vehicle for her students.
