Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.774724 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Sandra Milliken. Folk,World. Octavo. 14 pages. Sandra Milliken #3873279. Published by Sandra Milliken (A0.774724). The Old Palmer Song is a favourite Australian folk song that is meant to be sung in a rollicking style that reflects the excitement and anticipation of hardy Australian colonials setting out in search of gold. Following hard on the heels of the great California gold rushes (1848 – 1855) came the discovery of payable quantities of gold in Australia. The first gold rush in Australia began in New South Wales in May 1851 after prospector Edward Hargraves discovered gold near Orange, at a site he called Ophir. Other discoveries quickly followed, including those at Ballarat and Bendigo in the colony of Victoria. Then came Rosewood and Gympie (1867) in Queensland; the Gawler region in South Australia in 1868; and Halls Creek (1885), Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie (1893) in Western Australia. One of Australia’s richest alluvial goldfields was that of the Palmer River in far north Queensland. The rush to the Palmer began in 1873 and lasted for about three years. The goldfields were nearly 100 miles inland from the small coastal settlement of Cooktown and the early prospectors had a hard time of it just getting to the field. Leaving Cooktown they crossed the coastal mangroves, then on through dense tropical rainforest, into the more open eucalypt forest beyond and then across the dry, inhospitable and rugged country of the hinterland dissected by wide and deep rivers. And always there was the risk of meeting with fierce resistance from the Aborigines whose tribal land they were travelling through. At the height of the rush there were around 35,000 prospectors on the Palmer (including a great many Chinese). By the time the rush was over, the Palmer had yielded over 100 tons of gold! The Old Palmer Song is set to the tune of Ten Thousand Miles Away, a shore ballad/sea shanty that probably originated in Ireland in the early 19th Century.

Concert Band - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.936935 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Eads, Steve. Folk,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 42 pages. Steve Eads #6140461. Published by Steve Eads (A0.936935). (Revised 2021: Reset, slight changes to arrangement and transposed to Concert Bb.) This 19th century tune has been recorded by many artists and employed for rather dark humour settings, songs of rebellion and even US Presidential campaigns. This melody evoked in me the complex feelings of those who chose to uproot themselves from their homes to venture into new, often hostile, and challenging territory to establish a new life for themselves and their decendents. AKA Old Rosin the Beau, The Men of the West, Kelly's Irish Brigade and Lincoln and Liberty - for Abraham Lincoln's Presidential campaign.

Cello,Double Bass,Flute,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.576980 Composed by David Warin Solomons. 20th Century,Contemporary,Multicultural,World. 64 pages. David Warin Solomons #566725. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576980). Westerly is inspired by the old English folk song Westron Wynde and by the Renaissance masses based on that folk song It is an expanded version of Celebration originally written for James Pellerite and his North American Native flute [NAF] In order to make the piece accessible to a wider range of performers this version uses a concert flute, with wider range and with just a few of the NAF decorations, and the violin solo part has also been expanded, resulting in a miniature Double Concerto.  Westerly uses four distinct themes and weaves them into a joyful whole.  The flute soloist introduces himself with the traditional call of the North American Native flute (a repeated minor third phrase), which reappears from time to time in the rest of the piece, and then embarks upon a sort of jig in E flat major (second theme). The violin soloist copies these flute phrases but then introduces the third theme of the work in the related key of C minor, and the string orchestra comes in.  This third tune is based on the old Westron Wynde melody but it uses an unusual rhythm (3 3 2) and the excitement gradually begins to mount.  So the two soloists rhapsodise on the various tunes and permutations along with the orchestral strings, mixing the various tunes together.  In due course the fourth theme comes in, and it is quite surprising how it fits in with the E flat major - C minor interplay, since it is merely a 12 tone row. It follows some of the traditions of the 20th Century atonal composers, but, due to the context in which it is set, it takes on a warmth seldom found in atonal music. Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1298967 Composed by Ian Calvert. Christmas,Contemporary,Holiday. Score. 7 pages. Ian Calvert #888817. Published by Ian Calvert (A0.1298967). This is the first publication of a new Christmas song, set for baritone and piano. The words are those of a poem by Leonard Clark (1905 – 1981), an English poet who was raised in The Forest of Dean, in the west of England. In 1972 he published a slim little book of Christmas poems, of which ‘Singing in the Streets’ is one, surely one of the most appealing of Christmas poems. It gives its name to the book. The poem tells of an older man revisiting the village of his boyhood, and wondering whether, somehow, the streets still hold the sound of the carols that he and the other boys and girls sang there. It begins: ‘I had almost forgotten the singing in the streets,Snow piled up by the houses, drifting Underneath the door into the warm room, …’ It is very evocative of that time and of the magic that Christmas always holds for children. Drawn from the same book of poems there is available another new Christmas song, called The Birth; that one is set in two versions, one for voice and piano and the other for SATB a cappella. Ian Calvert.

Piano Trio Cello,Piano,Violin - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1360001 Composed by Dale Vail. Chamber,Classical. 74 pages. Dale Vail #944490. Published by Dale Vail (A0.1360001). Taming the Tasman - composed by Dale Vail in 2019 for the Tasman Trio with support from creative New Zealand. An exciting work for Violin, Cello, and Piano, this piece is not for the faint hearted. Depicting the journey of travelling across the Tasman to begin a new life in a brand new country, this work is full of excitement, despair, and determination. Underlined by the composers jazz influences, this autobiographical work uses the migration of birds between New Zealand and Australia as an allegory for the composers own experiences. Movement 1, Into the West depicts the perilous journey across the Tasman, and the intensity of being dropped into a new place to fend for yourself.Movement 2, Alone in a Crowd, tells the story of the loneliness that can come from being just that little bit out of place in a new society, whilst also full of character and strong personality.Movement 3, Broken Wing, begins with everything being too much, and reflecting on the many failures of the journey, but finishes with a vengeance and determination to prevail.
